Cricket South Africa, on Monday, named their squads for India’s multi-format tour to the rainbow nation, beginning on December 10.

Temba Bavuma, who led South Africa to a semi-final finish at the recently concluded 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, has been rested from the white-ball formats along with the experienced pacer Kagiso Rabada.

Aiden Markram will lead the South African team in ODIs and T20Is, while Bavuma will return as the captain for Test matches.

World Cup stars Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi will miss the final T20I and the ODI series to prepare for the subsequent Test series by playing domestic games.

Nadre Burger, David Bedingham, and Mihlali Mpongwana have recieved their maiden international call up, while Tristan Stubbs has received his first call-up to the Test team.

Pacer Anirch Nortje, who had missed the World Cup due to an injury, is yet to recover fully and will not feature in any of the series.

India’s tour to South Africa will start with a three-match T20I series on December 10, followed by a three-match ODI series from December 17.

The two teams will later face off in a two-match Test series, which will be a part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, starting on Boxing Day, December 26.

Australia’s Gold Coast has scrapped its last-ditch bid to hold the 2026 Commonwealth Games, leaving the event in limbo as organisers race to find a willing host.

The Australian state of Victoria was originally slated to host the Games, but unexpectedly pulled out in July this year citing an eye-watering cost blowout.

The Gold Coast, a beachside city of some 600,000 people in Queensland, offered to step in – but only in the unlikely event the federal government helped foot the bill.

With officials unimpressed by the idea, mayor Tom Tate said his bid to rescue the Games was over.

“We did our best and that’s all people can expect,” he said in a statement to Australian media on Sunday night.

“Sadly, at the same time, our country’s reputation as a place that reneges on a global sports contract remains in tatters.”

Commonwealth Games officials said last month they were working under tight timeframes to find a replacement, and would prefer to keep the event in Australia.

There was a possibility the delay would push the Games out to 2027, Commonwealth Games Federation boss Katie Sadleir said at the time.

Netherlands defeated mighty South Africa by 38 runs at the Cricket World Cup on Tuesday as the Dutch stunned the Proteas for the second time in a year.

Chasing 246 to win from a rain-reduced 43 overs after captain Scott Edwards made a crucial 78 not out, South Africa, one of the tournament favourites, were bowled out for 207 in the shadow of the Himalayas.

In November last year, the Netherlands sent South Africa crashing out of the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

The victory was the World Cup’s second major shock in three days after Afghanistan defeated defending champions England on Sunday.

There was no hint of drama to come as South Africa eased comfortably to 36-0 in their pursuit. However, four wickets then fell for the addition of just eight runs.

Quinton de Kock had cracked back-to-back centuries in South Africa’s impressive opening wins over Sri Lanka and Australia. But he was caught behind for 20 off Colin Ackermann, one of three South African-born players in the Dutch starting line-up.

Ackermann had been man-of-the match when the Netherlands shocked South Africa in Adelaide last year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on Tuesday, announced that it has filed a formal protest with the International Cricket Council in response to delays in granting visas to Pakistani media and the lack of a visa policy for Pakistani supporters attending the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

Pakistan have also lodged a protest about alleged inappropriate conduct targeted at the Pakistan squad during their match against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has lodged another formal protest with the ICC over delays in visas for Pakistani journalists and the absence of a visa policy for Pakistan fans for the ongoing World Cup 2023.

India’s PV Sindhu and Aakarshi Kashyap, on Tuesday, made their way into the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2023 Denmark Open Super 750 at Odense.

While Kashyap got the better of Germany’s Yvonne Li, Sindhu, who is coming off a semi-final exit at the 2023 Arctic Open in Finland, defeated Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in their respective opening round matches of the tournament.

The double Olympic medallist started off well, winning the first game comfortably at 21-14. However, Gilmour soon hit back to take the second game 21-18 and force a decider.

The Indian though bounced back well as she raced to an 11-2 lead in the third game before wrapping it up 21-10 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals in 56 minutes.

Kashyap, on the other hand, emerged victorius against the higher-ranked Li in 55 minutes. The Indian came back from a game down to win 10-21, 22-20, 21-12 to script a wonderful turnaround.

India’s long road to the Davis Cup final in 1974 began on a hot Saturday in May in Kanpur when it took on Japan in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Zone’s main draw. That team, powered by a tall 20-year-old sensation from Madras by the name of Vijay Amritraj, defeated its opponents with relative ease to move on to play one of the giants of the sport – Australia.

That face-off was thrilling and dramatic. Heroic efforts from Jasjit Singh along with Vijay and his brother Anand Amritraj helped India beat the Aussies 3-2 in Calcutta to advance to the semi-finals of the main competition.

Standing in its way next was a very good Soviet team that had edged out Czechoslovakia in Donetsk. But, high on confidence after defeating Australia, the Amritraj brothers made quick work of the Soviets in Poona to take the tie 3-1. This was only the second time that India advanced all the way to the final of the Davis Cup. India, which participated in the competition for the first time in 1921, was the runner-up in 1966, losing to Australia in what was called the Challenge Round.
