Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam, has commenced the online application process for the recruitment of Professors in the University. Eligible candidates can apply for the vacancies on the official websites andhrauniversity.edu.in and recruitments.universities.ap.gov.in till November 20 (upto 5.00 PM). Scientists at Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service on Wednesday said that 2023 is set to be the warmest year on record as October became the hottest October globally.

This comes after the year recorded the hottest June, July and September months globally. During the first and third weeks of July, global mean temperature temporarily exceeded the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold above the pre-industrial level. This means that the weeks were hotter than the planet was before it was warmed by burning coal, oil and gas and other human activities.

According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, crossing the global average temperature beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius could unleash severe climate change impacts, including more frequent and severe droughts, heatwaves and rainfall.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service, implemented by the European Commission, publishes monthly climate bulletins on the changes observed in global surface air and sea temperatures, sea ice cover and hydrological variables.

In its latest bulletin released on Wednesday, the scientists said that October 2023 was 1.7 degrees Celsius warmer than an estimate of the month’s average for the pre-industrial 1850-1900 period.

The month also recorded an average surface air temperature of 15.30 degrees Celsius, 0.85 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average for October. The average temperature was also 0.40 degrees Celsius above…

The Centre on Tuesday issued an advisory to social media companies to remove deepfake videos from their platforms within 36 hours of receiving a complaint, saying that such content violates the law and harms women in particular.

The advisory came after a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna was widely shared on social media and caused concern among users.

Deepfake is a technique for manipulating audio and video with the help of artificial intelligence software to show people saying or doing things that they never said or did. The content is made to appear as realistic as possible and is usually used with malicious intent.

Deepfake content poses a new threat to an online ecosystem that already teems with fake photos created through editing software as well as misinformation and disinformation.

In the video, Mandanna’s face has been morphed into a video where a woman can be seen entering an elevator. However, the original video featured a British-Indian social media influencer, Zara Patel, and had been uploaded to social media platform Instagram in October.

A statue of Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar was unveiled his home ground – Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai on Wednesday.

While stands at many grounds around the world are named after famous players, there are few statues of living cricketers anywhere and even fewer inside a venue.

“It is indeed a special moment for me,” said the 50-year-old Tendulkar following the unveiling. “I’m truly humbled…Standing here brings back so many memories.”

Earlier Tendulkar, surrounded by photographers, television personnel and police, was serenaded onto the outfield by a band playing traditional Indian dhol.

Then, at the push of a button, a statue created by local sculptor Pramod Kamble was unveiled amid fireworks and streamers.

The statue is sited high in a gap next to the Sachin Tendulkar stand, overlooking the field of play from square-on, with the ‘Little Master’ depicted at the finish of a classic straight drive – one of his most familiar shots.

Tendulkar, who retired in 2013 after a Test against the West Indies at the Wankhede, said every batter needs a non-striker as he dedicated the statue to “all the cricketers who played with me”.

Sadiq, an ethnic Hazara, fled Afghanistan last year because he was attacked and beaten by the members of the Taliban regime. Now, the 25-year-old faces expulsion from Pakistan and he fears a return to his home country could amount to a death sentence.

“Going to Kabul would be like going to a graveyard to be buried,” he said, recalling how the Taliban stormed his house in the Afghan capital and abducted him to find out the location of other family members who had worked for the previous government.

“I fear they will … kill me this time for running away. They have their eyes on me,” he said.

Last month, Pakistan ordered all illegal immigrants, including more than 1.5 million Afghan nationals, to leave the country by November 1 or be deported.

Sadiq, who lives in the southwestern city of Karachi with his family and who only gave his first name to protect his identity, said he had made no preparations to leave as he could see no future in Afghanistan.

Perhaps it was this very ability to take nonsensical verse and characters seriously, that led the Nabin Palli Durga Puja Committee in Hatibagan (North Kolkata) to re-create scenes, rhymes, and nonsense verse from the pages of Abol Tabol on the streets of Hatibagan.

As a text Ray’s Abol Tabol celebrates a hundred years, an apt time perhaps to re-imagine this flight of fantasy, and let it spill over as a breathing piece of art onto the streets of Kolkata. It wouldn’t be presumptuous to say that what artist Anirban Das has done here with the text (many of which are also taken from Ray’s unpublished poems) and the art is part re-imagining and part giving the old text a new life by putting it out there on the streets for people to interact with it, while they go about their daily business.

Same-sex couples face discrimination because they are not legally permitted to marry – but the legislature, not the judiciary, can provide them relief. This was the broad theme of the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court five-judge constitution bench on Tuesday.

The bench – comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices SK Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha – had heard a batch of petitions in April and May demanding marriage equality for the queer community.

The judgement includes four opinions. All of them pay lip service to the idea of queer rights but offer little in terms of the actually achieving those rights. The only noteworthy change introduced in the order is its affirmation that transgender people can marry under India’s existing marriage laws.

Of the four opinions, the one by Bhat, on behalf of himself and Kohli, is the majority opinion since it is also fully endorsed by Narasimha’s opinion. As per judicial custom, the directions contained in the majority opinion are what the state is obliged to follow.
