With Paris 2024 Olympics quota places on the line, at least two Indian women and one man, have ended day one of qualifications of the skeet competition at the Asia Olympic Qualification Shotgun in Kuwait City, Kuwait, within the top six.

Ganemat Sekhon shot 71 for her three rounds to place second, while Maheshwari Chauhan shot 70 for third spot in women’s skeet, even as Anant Jeet Singh Naruka (72) ended the day in fourth in the men’s event.

There are two Paris quota places available in each of the events and one country can only take one quota place. India are searching for their first Paris quota in Skeet. The Indian Shooting squad has so far bagged a record 17 Paris quota places thus far.

India number one Ganemat, a winner of four world cup medals in Olympic events, was the most successful Indian on the day after posting rounds of 24,24 and 23. She was one behind Gao Jinmei of China and one ahead of Maheshwari, who had rounds of 23, 23 and 24, to stay in contention. Raiza Dhillon was only slightly behind in eighth with a score of 67, a point below the top six mark.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the UGC NET December 2023 results and final answer key today, January 19. Eligible candidates can download their results from the official website ugcnet.nta.ac.in.

UGC NET December 2023 was conducted from December 6 to 19, 2023, in 292 cities across the country for 9,45,872 candidates.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a 20-year jail term, was on Thursday granted a 50-day parole, The Times of India reported.

The order signed by the divisional commissioner of Rohtak district in Haryana said that the convict will stay at the Barnava ashram in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in 2017 for raping two of his women disciples at the Dera headquarters in the Sirsa district. In 2021, he and four others were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of Ranjit Singh, a former manager of his sect.

A prisoner is granted parole based on an urgent demand or need. A furlough can be given without any reason after serving a stipulated amount of time in prison.

This is the seventh parole in the last 24 months and ninth in the last four years granted to Ram Rahim Singh, who is lodged in the Sunaria jail in the Rohtak district, according to NDTV.

Last year alone, Singh was released three times on parole, including for 40 days in January to attend the birthday anniversary of Dera chief Shah Satnam. He was seen in pictures cutting the cake with a sword.

Sreenidi Deccan’s first half performance was enough to condemn Hyderabad FC to a third successive defeat in the Super Cup on Friday. For Sreenidi, the 4-1 win means the end the competition on a positive note with points to their name.

In a blistering opening passage of play, Sreenidi Deccan put the game beyond Hyderabad FC’s reach and ensured they’d finish the tournament with no points on the board at all.

It would be small consolation for Carlos Vaz Pinto, but that opening passage was the best Sreenidi have looked all season, across competitions.

The three police commando units in Manipur’s Moreh town will be relocated in the wake of the attacks on security forces, said the state government’s security advisor Kuldiep Singh on Thursday, reported PTI.

On Wednesday, Indian Reserve Battalion commando Takhellambam Sieleshwor Singh and Manipur Rifles commando Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei were shot dead in separate attacks in Moreh, a town along the border with Myanmar. Six other security personnel were injured.

The situation in Moreh has been tense following an ambush on security forces by suspected insurgents on December 30, after which a curfew was imposed.

On the recent attacks, Kuldiep Singh said on Thursday that the current locations of the commando units were unsuitable and made them vulnerable targets.

“Yesterday morning, militants targeted the commando posts at three locations – two hotels and SBI Moreh,” he said. “After numerous coordination meetings, it was concluded that the units were positioned in the lower areas of the town, making them susceptible to attacks from hill areas.

He added: “We have decided to relocate the units to higher areas of the town, where they can effectively counter the militants.”

Indian paddler Sreeja Akula reigned supreme as she won her first-ever international title, the WTT Feeder event in Corpus Christie, US on Friday. The two-time national champion beat world No 46 Lily Zhang 11-6, 18-16, 11-5 in the women’s final.

En route to her title win, Akula, ranked 94 in the world, beat Stephanie Loeuillette 3-1 and got the better of top seed Amy Wang 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 11-1, 6-11, 11-9) in what was a thrilling quarter-final.

In the semi-final, she faced Jiangshan Gao, another American player who was a tough opponent for Akula. The American would be trailing 1-2 before staging a comeback in the fourth game to push the match to a decider. However, Akula held her nerve and closed out the fifth game 11-9 to enter the finals.

As reported by Sportstar, Akula has considered this title win as a confidence booster for her hopes in qualifying for the Paris Olympics, having also beaten two higher-ranked players on course to the title.

The Union health ministry has asked doctors to mention the reason while prescribing antibiotics in a bid to curb the growing resistance of the drug among the citizens, The Times of India reported.

Antibiotics are drugs used to prevent and cure bacterial infections among humans, animals and plants.

Director General of Health Services Doctor Atul Goel has written a letter, appealing to doctors and pharmacists to mandatorily ensure that antibiotics as well as medicines under the Schedules H and H1 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules are sold under valid prescriptions.

According to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, the medicines that fall under Schedules H and H1 cannot be sold without a prescription.

“It is in urgent appeal to all the doctors to make it a mandatory practice to write indication/reason/Justification while prescribing anti-microbials,” the letter said. “Looking forward to your support the promote judicious use of anti-microbials to reduce emergence of AMR.”

It also urged doctors and pharmacists to ensure that over-the-counter sales of Schedule H and H1 drugs are stopped. Over-the-counter sales of Schedule H and H1 drugs are a widespread cause for the rise in anti-microbial resistance among Indians.

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the petitions filed by all 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case seeking an extension of the deadline to surrender, reported Live Law.

On January 8, a bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan had quashed a Gujarat government order that granted remission to the convicts and asked them to surrender before jail authorities within two weeks.

The convicts on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking more time to surrender citing various reasons, including aged parents, ill health and crop harvest. Appearing for three of the convicts, senior advocate V Chitambaresh, had appealed to a bench led by Nagarathna to list the matter for Friday as the deadline set by the court for their surrender expires on Sunday.

On Friday, the court said that the reasons cited by the convicts to allow an extension “lacked merit”.

“…those reasons in no way prevent them from complying with our directions,” said the Supreme Court.

The 11 men were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for gangraping Bilkis Bano and murdering 14 members of her family during the 2002 communal riots in the state. One of the men had snatched Bano’s daughter from her arms and smashed her head on a rock. At the time, 19-year-old Bano was pregnant.

Actor Nayanthara on Thursday apologised for allegedly hurting sentiments of Hindus with her film Annapoorani, which was removed from streaming platform Netflix on January 11 after Hindutva groups alleged that some scenes depicted the Hindu deity Ram as a meat eater.

The actor said it was unexpected for the film, which received a censor certificate prior to its theatrical release on December 1, to be removed from the streaming platform upon its digital release.
