Javi Siverio’s goal helped Jamshedpur FC secure a 1-1 draw against Kerala Blasters FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in the Indian Super League 2023-24 on Saturday.

Ahead of the match, Kerala Blasters required a victory to ensure that they booked a berth in the playoffs. Their march towards the same received a boost courtesy of an opening strike by Greek striker Dimitrios Diamantakos in the 23rd minute of the match.

However, Siverio, who had been a constant source of threat for the Kerala Blasters FC defence ensured that he struck the back of the net in the 45th minute.

Siverio kept hovering around the visiting team’s backline, poking their defensive line to find credible breakthroughs. He came close to doing so in the 12th minute, teaming with Rei Tachikawa before launching a fierce shot that landed off target.

Kerala Blasters then capitalised on this missed opportunity to Diamantakos’s strike.

Rahul KP steered the ball forward before playing it on the path of Emmanuel Justine Ojoka who was inside the box. The latter took a deft touch, before directing the ball towards Diamantakos, who deposited it into the net with little fuss.

Jamshedpur FC got their act together soon afterwards, with Tachikawa, Jeremy Manzorro, Imran Khan, and Mohammed Sanan taking turns…

Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC played out a goalless draw in their Indian Super League 2023-24 encounter at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday.

The result handed a big jolt to the Juggernauts and their hopes of clinching the League Winners Shield as they now have 36 points from 19 games, five behind what the top-placed Mumbai City FC (41) has accumulated from the same number of matches. On the other hand, Bengaluru FC is back in the top six courtesy of the outcome of this match.

It was a day where the backlines of both the teams were the saving graces, helping them keep a clean sheet each. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was solid between the posts for the home side, making multiple decisive stops that denied Odisha FC the breakthrough until the end.

Ahmed Jahouh delivered a curling ball for Jerry Lalrinzuala inside the box on the left flank of the final third. Sandhu used his big frame to good effect to ensure that Jerry didn’t have too much space to attempt a shot in the 31st minute.

Fijian forward Roy Krishna had breached the home side’s defence to storm into their defensive half with a solo effort in the added time of the first…

Good Friday and Easter – along with other days during Holy Week – are some of the most important on the Christian calendar. During this time, Christian communities around the world commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ through a variety of religious rituals and observances.

However, while these dates have religious significance for Christians, they have also become important for some Hindu and Muslim communities in South Africa. The story of Easter’s significance for these South African Hindus and Muslims is intertwined with slavery, colonialism and indentured labour – all of which have shaped the history of modern South Africa.

South African Indians number about 1.5 million people, around 2% of the country’s population, concentrated in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. Most South African Indians trace their roots to indentured workers who were brought by the British colonial government between 1860 to 1911 to grow the colonial economy by working on sugarcane plantations. The majority of these indentured workers came from modern-day Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with a smaller percentage coming from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

For these migrant workers who found themselves in an unfamiliar land, religious ceremonies and rituals provided a way to build community and a shared identity. For the…

Raw pace is what best catches the attention of fans and experts alike when an unknown fast bowler rushes in to the bowling crease for the first time. Combine it with a good run-up, smooth action, accuracy, and cricketing smarts and you know the bowler would be a force to reckon with.

That’s exactly what Mayank Yadav displayed on his Indian Premier League debut for the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium against the Punjab Kings on Saturday.

The 21-year-old pacer from Delhi finished with figures of 3-27 in his four overs as the Super Giants beat the Kings by 21 runs despite a fighting 50-ball 70 from the visiting skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

Earlier in the day, the Lucknow Super Giants posted a mammoth 199/8 after opting to bat first, riding on the back of a half-century from opener Quinton de Kock (54). Stand in skipper Nicholas Pooran (42) and Krunal Pandya (43*) also played vital knocks even as Sam Curran picked up three wickets for the Punjab Kings.

Turning point of the match

The Punjab Kings were cruising in the chase with openers Jonny Bairstow (42) and Dhawan finding boundaries at will. They duo added 61 runs in the batting powerplay and continued to motor along, bringing up a 100-run…

Jayant Kaikini chuckles when I tell him I would like to be a character in his story.

We are driving around in south Bangalore, looking for a cafe where we can sit and talk about Mithun Number Two, the Kannada writer-poet’s latest collection of stories translated into English by the academic and cultural theorist, Tejaswini Niranjana.

Some writers excel in putting their characters under a clinical gaze, in piercing the bubble of their self-delusions, in remorselessly showing them to be the limited creatures of their time. Kaikini is not one of them.

In Kaikini’s world, however flawed and ordinary, characters are touched by their creator’s kindness and understanding, if not elevated by his sense of wonder about their lives.

Kaikini admits that he does not really dislike any of his characters. “When I finally understand why they do what they do, I feel bad for them,” he says. “I don’t judge because I feel connected.”

In many ways, Mumbai is a metaphor for that connection.

In 1976, Kaikini travelled from Gokarna to Bombay to work in pharmaceutical companies, treading a path several generations from the coasts of Karnataka have taken. He ended up spending 24 years there, writing away from the gaze of a Kannada critical establishment that was influenced by the Navya (modernist)…

Last December, Khalid Shaikh missed 20 days of school and had to be hospitalised for nearly two weeks, as he battled a serious bout of typhoid that gave him fever, splitting headaches, stomach and body pain.

His family spent Rs 1 lakh on his treatment.

The 15-year-old and his friend had eaten food from a street vendor. Both ended up with typhoid, a water-borne disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi that attacks multiple organs, causes vomiting and, in rare cases, leads to death. The bacteria spreads through contaminated food and water, often in unsanitary environments.

India accounts for more than half of the global typhoid burden.

When Shaikh first developed a headache and stomach ache, a local doctor prescribed antibiotics. Then followed high fever that recurred every four hours. He was admitted to a hospital in Jogeshwari, a western suburb of Mumbai. When his fever did not subside, his parents shifted him to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital.

“The doctors there suspected typhoid,” his mother Shabina Shaikh said. The teenager was given a strong dose of antibiotics because milder ones did not work on him. Twenty days after discharge, the typhoid relapsed. This time, he was in hospital for three more days.

Shaikh is a classic example of antimicrobial resistance, a condition…

Most people, at one time or another, act foolishly. However, truly ignorant individuals exhibit a lack of introspection and stubbornly cling to their opinions, regardless of how irrational they may be. These people demonstrate unwavering self-assurance and are often oblivious to their own inadequacies. They craft retrospective justifications to validate their beliefs and hold onto them.

Even when presented with opportunities for personal growth and change, they seem incapable of breaking free from their entrenched habits. Reasoning with stubborn individuals can be as perplexing as it is frustrating. Many have written it off as a hopeless task.

As American writer Mark Twain once cautioned:

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

To argue against stupidity only seems to reinforce it. These individuals thrive on power and control, defending their position and denying their foolishness, regardless of counterarguments.

Despite these challenges, it is still possible to sway such people towards more sensible behaviour. It all starts with understanding the roots of stupidity. From a psychological perspective, stupidity is often considered an outcome of cognitive biases or errors in judgment.

The Delhi Police Special Cell on Saturday filed an 8,000-page chargesheet in the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act case against NewsClick founder and editor Prabir Puryakayastha, who has been in judicial custody since November.

Purkayastha and NewsClick’s parent company PPK NewsClick Studio Pvt. Ltd. have been named as accused parties that allegedly received funds through Chinese entities “with the intention of undermining India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

The Delhi Police had on October 3 raided several journalists associated with NewsClick and arrested Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty, NewsClick’s head of human resources. In January, a Delhi court allowed Chakraborty to turn approver – or act as a government witness – in the case filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Non-profit organisations Reporters Without Borders and Guernica 37 Chambers on Wednesday called on the European Union to sanction four high-ranking officers of the Delhi Police for “exactions” against journalists associated with news website NewsClick.

Without naming the police officers, the organisations said that they ordered raids on the homes of 46 journalists associated with NewsClick in Delhi and surrounding towns in October.

Purkayastha had appealed to the Supreme Court after the Delhi High Court on October 13 dismissed a petition against his and Chakraborty’s arrest. The High Court had said that their actions “directly impact the stability, integrity and sovereignty of the country”.

The Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday that it has rescued and repatriated about 250 Indians who were “forced to undertake illegal cyber work” in Cambodia. Of these, 75 persons were repatriated in the last three months.

A report in The Indian Express on Friday had claimed that there are at least 5,000 Indians who have been “forced into cyber-slavery in Cambodia” by fraudsters.

“We have seen media reports on Indian nationals stuck in Cambodia,” said Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. “Our Embassy in Cambodia has been promptly responding to complaints from Indian nationals who were lured with employment opportunities to that country but were forced to undertake illegal cyber work.”

Jaiswal said that the ministry remains “committed to helping all those Indian nationals in Cambodia who seek our support”.

“We are also working with Cambodian authorities and with agencies in India to crack down on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes,” Jaiswal added, without specifying any estimate on the likely number of Indians who are still trapped in the Southeast Asian country.

According to The Indian Express, the matter came to light after the Rourkela Police in Odisha busted a cyber-crime syndicate in December, arresting eight people who were…

Nepal’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation released 25 critically endangered gharials (Gavialis gangeticus) into a tributary of the transboundary Mahakali River (also known as Sarda in India) on March 17. This action, the department says, aligns with plans to gradually reintroduce the crocodiles to rivers where they historically had roamed but became extinct due to various reasons.

However, researchers and conservationists observing the release have raised concerns regarding the transparency and timing of the process.

A total of 22 females and three males raised at the gharial breeding center at Chitwan National Park were released into the Chaudhar River, which flows through the Shuklaphanta National Park part of the Terai Arc Landscape in far western Nepal. The last remaining gharial in the river was found dead in 1993.

“We welcome the translocation of the gharials into rivers where they historically roamed,” said crocodile researcher and conservationist Ashish Bashyal from the non-profit Biodiversity Conservancy Nepal. “However, it could have been done in a better way,” he added.

Gharials, known for their slender snouts ending in a swollen tip, previously inhabited the Ganga River and its tributaries in South Asia. Presently, they are found in only a handful of rivers within the Ganga Basin, facing threats from dams and barrages, fishing, infrastructure…

The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to the Kerala government after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that his administration had withdrawn cases filed against individuals in connection with anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in the state, The Hindu reported on Friday.

The chief electoral officer of Kerala has asked the state’s chief secretary to file a response in the matter by Saturday.

Last week, Vijayan had announced that 629 of the 835 cases that have been filed in Kerala in connection with protests against the contentious citizenship law had been withdrawn from trial courts. The government may have to recall the decision to withdraw the cases if the Election Commission finds it to be in violation of the Model Code of Conduct, according to The Hindu.

The Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission that political parties and governments are mandated to follow while campaigning.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, approved by Parliament on December 11, 2019, offers an expedited route to citizenship to refugees from six minority religious communities – except Muslims – from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

After Vijayan’s announcement, Bharatiya Janata Party state unit chief K Surendran alleged that the move was aimed at appeasing and garnering the votes of a particular community.

Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem – the first of a popular trilogy titled Remembrance of Earth’s Past – has entertained and challenged readers since first appearing in Chinese in 2006.

The 2014 English translation, by acclaimed American science-fiction author Ken Liu, became the first work by an Asian author to win the Hugo Award for best sci-fi novel.

The book is among the most widely-read works of modern Chinese fiction in English, and Liu’s critical reputation and fan base (which includes Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg) continues to grow. A 30-episode Chinese adaptation of the The Three-Body Problem aired in 2023; Netflix released a condensed, eight-episode version later in March 2024.

A key element of the book’s English-language success may be Ken Liu’s interventionist translation. With the author’s blessing, Liu rearranged the chapter order, reversing an earlier precaution taken by Cixin to limit Chinese censors’ interest in the original.

Thus, in English, the novel begins with the chaos and trials of the Cultural Revolution.

That upheaval, which tore families apart, traumatising a generation, also marked Liu Cixin’s early childhood. His father, a member of a mining institute cadre, was sent from Beijing to work in the mines of Shanxi province. Some of his earliest memories are of gunfire and the armbands worn by the Red Guards.

The Communist Party of India has been served a notice by the Income Tax Department for procedural violations after two of its state units were found to be using old Permanent Account Number, or PAN, cards to file their income tax returns, ANI reported on Saturday citing the party’s general secretary D Raja.

Raja did not, however, specify the dates on which the notices were received by his party.

On being asked if the party has received any notices regarding a tax demand, Raja said that they had not received such a notice from the Income Tax Department.

Media reports on Friday suggested that the Communist Party of India had been asked to pay dues worth Rs 11 crore for the PAN card violation.

Raja’s confirmation of the notice to the Communist Party of India comes a day after the Income Tax Department served a fresh notice of Rs 1,823 crore to the Congress a day after the Delhi High Court rejected the party’s petitions challenging the tax reassessment proceedings for the financial years 2017-’18 to 2020-’21.

On Saturday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed that the party received two more notices on Friday night, reported The Times of India, though their contents were not specified.
