Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India wants normal and neighbourly relations with Pakistan.

In an interview to Nikkei Asia, Modi said that it was incumbent upon Islamabad to create a conducive environment that is free of terrorism and hostilities.

“The onus is on Pakistan to take necessary steps in this regard,” the prime minister told the newspaper.

Modi made the remarks ahead of his visit to Japan for the G7 summit and the third in-person meeting of Quad leaders. He will also travel to Papua New Guinea and Australia.

The G7 comprises Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada and Italy, as well as the European Union. On the other hand, the Quad consists of India, the United States, Japan and Australia.

Relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated since terrorist attacks at the Pathankot air base in January 2016 and on a Central Reserve Police Force convoy in Pulwama in February 2019.

India’s moves to remove the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370 of the Constitution and to bifurcate the erstwhile state into two Union Territories also strained ties between the…

The battle lines had long been drawn. Now the fight has reached a critical stage. The May 9 attacks on military installations in some cities seem to be a turning point. Enraged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters directly took on the security establishment. Former prime minister Imran Khan has lashed out at the army chief, thus crossing the Rubicon.

Now the empire has struck back. Thousands of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders and supporters have been arrested in a countrywide crackdown. Some of them could face trial under the Army Act. The creeping shadow of army rule is becoming more pronounced.

However, the battle between Imran Khan and the security establishment is only one part of the game of thrones. The other part features the ruling coalition which is up in arms against the top judiciary and is vowing to remove the chief justice, who they allege is favouring the former prime minister. The court’s order to release Khan within a day of his arrest and provide him with protection from further action has intensified the conflict. Parliament has passed a resolution calling to file a reference against the top judge.

The ruling coalition has also decided to demonstrate its street power. Thousands of opposition supporters this week gathered outside the Supreme…

As the proceedings of the marriage equality case conclude in the Supreme Court, for some of us, the proceedings are triggering and mentally and emotionally exhausting. Why? They are a reminder of the ignorance, injustice, apathy and prejudice we have battled for decades. Most eyes see committed individuals in black and white their energetic bodies jostling with each other and their opinions clashing in the air of the courtroom. Some of us see dead people in attendance to these proceedings.

You may not see them. Perhaps you don’t know them. Maybe you do but never noticed who they were or the depth of misery in their eyes. They may be people in your family, community, or those who pass by every day. You may not notice them but we see them everywhere. These folks represent oppression and indignity in different times, spaces and settings of the society and nation we live in. They are an almost continuous, unbroken line of eyes watching and waiting in the courtroom.

Some of these are also those who did not live to see and witness this day where equality can be demanded and debated. They faced historical bias, structural and systematic oppression given to us by the colonisers….

In 2017, the strange goings-on in the crypto world had caught the attention of Vijay Pal Dalmia, partner and head of the intellectual property and information technology laws division at Vaish Associates Advocates. The tough-as-nails lawyer based in Delhi had been reading about cryptocurrencies and was increasingly concerned about how they could be abused in the absence of any regulatory oversight.

The trigger came when he first read about the cyberattack on May 13, 2017, by WannaCry ransomware, a malicious ambush that targeted computers using Microsoft Windows across the world. WannaCry did so by either encrypting valuable files, such that users were unable to read them or by locking them out of their computers, so that they couldn’t use them at all. The cybercriminals then demanded payment of a ransom in bitcoin for releasing the data or freeing the computer.

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, set up by Yevgeny Valentinovich Kaspersky (who has helped identify instances of government sponsored cyberwarfare and has been a leading advocate for an international treaty prohibiting cyberwarfare), wrote that paradoxically, the criminals who mounted the attack took advantage of a flaw in the Windows operating system, using a hack that had been allegedly developed by the United States National Security Agency….

8 A.M. Metro uses a modern transport system to explore an old-fashioned encounter between strangers. Raj Ra’s Hindi-language film has books, poetry by Gulzar, and characters who take it nice and easy. Even the names of the characters seem to have been plucked out of a well-thumbed novel: she is Iravati (Saiyami Kher), he is Pritam (Gulshan Devaiah).

During a visit to Hyderabad, the emotionally reserved Iravati befriends the kindly Pritam. He helps her overcome her fear of train travel, infects her with his love for literature and praises her poetry. The traffic isn’t one-way – Iravati too is helping Pritam deal with his own situation.

The metro network, usually associated with speed and momentum, slows down to allow Iravati and Pritam to get to know each another. Both of them are married and with children. They find common ground through the cerebral as well as the trivial. In the gentle rhythms of their encounters, the possibility of a new kind of companionship emerges.

The writer-director wants you to stop stealing glances at your cellphone and listen keenly not just to the ultimately life-altering exchanges between Iravati and Pritam but also the silences that punctuate their conversations. It’s a tough demand in these attention-deficit times. It’s even…

On a rainy morning on May 4, a group of workers reached a major crossing in Srinagar city centre.

They walked up to a sandbag bunker – one among the scores of similar structures from behind which security personnel watch the city.

Within three hours, the pile of sandbags had been covered with a structure made out of blue iron sheets, with a wire mesh in front to allow a soldier to look out.

The final touch? A billboard with the G20 logo and images of the snow-clad mountains in Gulmarg, Kashmir’s popular ski resort, was stuck in front.

The “smart bunker” was ready.

Around 30 or 40 security bunkers are being renovated at the cost of Rs 44.44 lakh, as the Jammu and Kashmir administration prepares for a meeting of G20 representatives in Srinagar on May 22.

That is not all. Srinagar’s roads are being spruced up with demarcated cycle tracks, markets are being turned into pedestrian-only and barbed wire-free zones and art students are painting murals featuring wild peacocks and rababs – the stringed instrument used in Kashmiri folk music – on walls around the city.

“We are trying to portray certain aspects of Kashmiri culture and the past,” said Shahid Shabir Wani, a 23-year-old undergraduate student in…

Prathamesh Jawkar, Avneet Kaur made it a memorable day for Indian compound archers at the Shanghai 2023 Hyundai Archery World Cup stage 2 on Thursday.

Jawkar and Kaur reached their individual compound semifinal events, and will be shooting for medals at the season’s second World Cup on Saturday.

The conditions were once again tough to shoot and it meant plenty of upsets on compound eliminations day. Only Ella Gibson and Mike Schloesser were the familiar names to reach the final four.

In men’s event, 19-year-old Jawkar, who is competing at his second World Cup, defeated top seed Kim Jongho of Korea, 149-147. “I feel absolutely great,” said Jawkar according to World Archery. “In my mind, I was thinking I needed to keep my composure and stay in the present.”

In the women’s event, 18-year-old Kaur pulled off the shock of the day by overcoming Korea’s Oh Yoohyun, holding off a comeback from the top seed to win the tiebreaker.

“It’s a great moment for me to be in the semifinals,” said Kaur. “This is my best show in individual events and I want to give credit to my coaches and family.”

In a season where most Sunrisers Hyderabad batters have struggled, Heinrich Klaasen carried his rich vein of form to score a spectacular 104 off 51 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday, to register his second T20 century.

After Sunrisers Hyderabad were reduced to 28/2 in 4.3 overs, he stitched a 76-run partnership with Aiden Markram and a 74-run stand with Harry Brook to help SRH bounce back to eventually post a competitive 186/5.

In an attacking display against spin, the South African hit eight fours and six sixes. Infact, even to reach the milestone on his 49th delivery, he lofted a straight six straight down the ground. Following his century, there was a fiery roar for the celebration. He was only dismissed by Harshal Patel in the penultimate over.

Klaasen’s ton was the second by a SRH batter this season.

As Israel celebrates the 75th anniversary of its founding, and nearly a century and a half after the first Zionists came to Palestine from Europe, the core tension behind the country’s establishment – whether a Jewish state could be a democratic state, whether Zionism could accommodate pluralism – is more obvious than ever.

Israel today is a military powerhouse and one of 38 members of the influential Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, formed in 1961 to promote cooperation among democratic, free-market-oriented governments.

Such strength and economic viability would be unfamiliar to the Jews whose identity was forged in the European diaspora. There, Judaism and its practitioners shunned political and military power. They saw themselves as a minority facing discrimination, persecution and violence. Power was the domain of gentiles.

Jews, often separated from the non-Jewish world, focused instead on developing social institutions to help the poor and weak, not asserting their will as a political community.

This attitude toward the state and politics began to change for Europe’s Jews in the aftermath of the French Revolution, when the majority of Jews lived in Europe, especially central and Eastern Europe. As some of the traditional legal and political barriers that kept Jews outside of mainstream society began to crumble, Jews began to integrate into broader…
