The Karnataka government has issued a lookout notice for Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna after he failed to appear before the Special Investigation Team looking into the allegations of sexual abuse against him, The Hindu reported on Thursday.

Revanna, who represents Karnataka’s Hassan parliamentary constituency, is believed to be in the city of Munich in Germany, where to flew to between April 27 and April 28 using his diplomatic passport. He has been suspended from the party.

The issuance of the lookout circular means that Revanna will be detained immediately when he enters India at any immigration point at airports, sea ports or at border checkposts.

The Hindu cited unidentified sources as saying that Revanna is expected to return to India on May 15.

Revanna on Wednesday had sought seven days to appear before the Special Investigation Team. “As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID [Crime Investigation Department] Bangalore through my advocate,” Revanna said in a social media post. “Truth will prevail soon.”

This came as Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday seeking that Revanna’s diplomatic passport be cancelled. The Special Task Force of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday arrested a man for allegedly uploading a doctored video of Chief Minister Adityanath on social media platform X.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Special Task Force) Raj Kumar Mishra said that the man, identified as 48-year-old Shyam Kishor Gupta, was arrested at his residence in Noida, The Times of India reported.

The doctored video was uploaded a day earlier on X, Mishra said. “The video was posted on Twitter under the account @shyamguptarpswa, causing confusion and outrage among the public.”

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened the online application window for the CSIR UGC NET June-2024 examination. Candidates can apply for the examination on the official website csirnet.nta.ac.in till May 25 upto 11.50 PM. Applicants will be able to make changes to their application forms from May 25 to 27.

The CSIR-UGC NET June-2024 will be conducted in CBT mode on June 25, 26 and 27 for a duration of 3 hours. The exam is held to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for Lectureship (LS) /Assistant Professor in Indian Universities and Colleges.

A viral video of Galgotias University students unable to explain the motive behind their protest against Congress has drawn laughter and criticism on social media. In a video posted by Aaj Tak (below), the students are seen about inheritance tax, and “urban naxals”, among others. Salima Tete has been announced as the captain of the Indian women’s hockey team for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches in Europe. Hockey India on Thursday announced the 24-member squad which will play matches in Belgium and England.

India will play against Argentina, Belgium, Spain, Great Britain and Germany twice each across both legs, beginning their campaign against Argentina on May 22. India are currently placed sixth in the Pro League standings having eight points from eight matches.

Tete, who was recently honoured with the prestigious Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of The Year 2023 in the women’s category will lead the side with midfielder Navneet Kaur named as vice-captain.

The goalkeeping responsibilities will rest with Savita Punia and Bichu Devi Kharibam, while the defensive line-up includes Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, Monika, Jyoti Chhatri and Mahima Chaudhary.

The Delhi Police on Thursday appealed to citizens not to believe the audio messages being circulated on WhatsApp making false claims about bomb threats sent to multiple schools in the national capital, reported PTI.

“Some audio messages are being pushed on WhatsApp and other chat groups that some suspicious objects were found in some schools,” read a statement issued by the Delhi Police. “These messages are false and have no truth in them. We request all to please convey further that these are false messages.”

On Wednesday, nearly 100 schools in Delhi and the National Capital Region received bomb threats on their official email addresses.

Subsequently, officials from the police and the fire department conducted inspections in the schools. The police confirmed that the threats were found to be hoax.

Senior police officer Rohit Meena said the schools were closed and the students were sent back home after the threat emails.

Later in the day, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena told media persons the police had traced the origin of the emails and that an investigation was underway. “I am assuring citizens of Delhi that the police are alert, getting leads, and will take strict action,” he said.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the sacking of 223 employees of the Delhi Commission for Women on grounds that their employment is “irregular” and “illegal”, reported The Indian Express on Thursday.

“The approval of government is hereby conveyed to DCW to discontinue service of all contractual staff with immediate effect who have been appointed by the DCW at any point in time, by going beyond its delegated powers and without following various procedures laid down and in violation of DCW Act/rules/regulations/guidelines issued by Govt. of NCT of Delhi,” read a notice issued by Saxena’s office on April 29.

The Supreme Court recently observed that appropriate rites and ceremonies must be performed for a Hindu marriage to be valid under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, reported Live Law on Tuesday.

The court passed the judgement on April 19 in a petition by a woman seeking the transfer of divorce proceedings. Amid the divorce proceedings, the woman and her husband had jointly applied for a declaration that their marriage was not valid as they had not performed any customs and rites.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih held that the marriage of the petitioners was not valid since it was not solemnised, reported Live Law.

“Where a Hindu marriage is not performed in accordance with the applicable rites or ceremonies such as saptapadi [the rite where a couple walks around a fire seven times] when included, the marriage will not be construed as a Hindu marriage,” the judgement said.

The bench also held that the registration of a Hindu marriage under Section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act only facilitates proof of the marriage but does not provide it legitimacy.

Paul Auster was born on February 3, 1947, in Newark, US. Besides novels, he wrote poetry, screenplays, essays, and translated from the French. Some of his best-known works include The New York Trilogy (1987), Moon Palace (1989), The Book of Illusions (2002), The Brooklyn Follies(2005), Sunset Park (2010), and 4 3 2 1 (2017). His books have been translated into more than forty languages.

The search for identity and personal meaning was a common theme in Auster’s later publications, many of which concentrated heavily on the role of coincidence and random events and also the relationships between people and their environment. Auster’s heroes often find themselves obliged to work as part of someone else’s inscrutable schemes.

In 1995, Auster wrote and co-directed the films Smoke and Blue in the Face. He has also translated Jean-Paul Sartre, Jacques Dupin, and Stéphane Mallarmé from the French.

On March 11, 2023, Auster’s wife, the writer Siri Hustvedt, posted on Instagram that he had been diagnosed with cancer in the previous year. He died of complications of lung cancer at his home in Brooklyn on April 30, 2024. He was 77.
