Netherlands defeated mighty South Africa by 38 runs at the Cricket World Cup on Tuesday as the Dutch stunned the Proteas for the second time in a year.

Chasing 246 to win from a rain-reduced 43 overs after captain Scott Edwards made a crucial 78 not out, South Africa, one of the tournament favourites, were bowled out for 207 in the shadow of the Himalayas.

In November last year, the Netherlands sent South Africa crashing out of the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.

The victory was the World Cup’s second major shock in three days after Afghanistan defeated defending champions England on Sunday.

There was no hint of drama to come as South Africa eased comfortably to 36-0 in their pursuit. However, four wickets then fell for the addition of just eight runs.

Quinton de Kock had cracked back-to-back centuries in South Africa’s impressive opening wins over Sri Lanka and Australia. But he was caught behind for 20 off Colin Ackermann, one of three South African-born players in the Dutch starting line-up.

Ackermann had been man-of-the match when the Netherlands shocked South Africa in Adelaide last year.

Skipper Temba Bavuma (16) fell three runs later, clean bowled by Roelof van der Merwe who played 13 ODIs for South Africa before moving to the Netherlands.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on Tuesday, announced that it has filed a formal protest with the International Cricket Council in response to delays in granting visas to Pakistani media and the lack of a visa policy for Pakistani supporters attending the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

Pakistan have also lodged a protest about alleged inappropriate conduct targeted at the Pakistan squad during their match against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.

It remains unclear which instances of misconduct the PCB is specifically complaining against. However, after the end of the India-Pakistan match, videos of Indian fans chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ as Pakistani player Muhammad Rizwan returned to the dressing room surfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was also booed during the toss.

India’s PV Sindhu and Aakarshi Kashyap, on Tuesday, made their way into the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2023 Denmark Open Super 750 at Odense.

While Kashyap got the better of Germany’s Yvonne Li, Sindhu, who is coming off a semi-final exit at the 2023 Arctic Open in Finland, defeated Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in their respective opening round matches of the tournament.

The double Olympic medallist started off well, winning the first game comfortably at 21-14. However, Gilmour soon hit back to take the second game 21-18 and force a decider.

The Indian though bounced back well as she raced to an 11-2 lead in the third game before wrapping it up 21-10 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals in 56 minutes.

Kashyap, on the other hand, emerged victorius against the higher-ranked Li in 55 minutes. The Indian came back from a game down to win 10-21, 22-20, 21-12 to script a wonderful turnaround.

This was Kashyap’s first win against the German in four outings.

Kidambi Srikanth, Lakshya Sen exit

Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen bowed out of contention in men’s singles after losing their respective Round of 32 matches.

While Srikanth went down 21-19, 10-21, 16-21 to China’s Weng Hong Yang, Sen lost 16-21, 18-21 in straight games to a much lower ranked…

The Mauritius Supreme Court earlier this month declared unconstitutional a law that criminalises consensual same-sex acts between adult men. The decision boosts the trend in the Southern African Development Community region towards decriminalisation. Now, a slight majority – nine out of 16 member states – do not prohibit gay and lesbian sexual relations.

I have researched and taught human rights law in Africa, including the rights of sexual minorities, for over three decades, and closely follow the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The African Commission, as the continent’s human rights custodian, should lend its unequivocal support to the decriminalisation trend. This is particularly significant as attempts are made to further criminalise and stigmatise sexual minorities in parts of Africa.

The commission has not yet expressed its view on the decision. Its 77th ordinary session, starting on October 20 in Arusha, Tanzania, is an opportunity to do so. It should build on its 2014 guidance to African states on eradicating violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Mauritius court ruling

The Mauritian Supreme Court found that section 250 of the 1838 Mauritius Criminal Code, which criminalises anal sex between two consenting adult men, violates the 1968 Mauritius constitution.

The litigant, Ah Seek, a gay Mauritian man and board member of the Mauritian NGO Collectif-Arc-en-Ciel, invoked a…

Members of the LGBTQIA community on Tuesday expressed their disappointment in the Supreme Court judgement that refused to legalise same-sex marriages and left it to Parliament to formulate a law on the matter.

A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud delivered its verdict on Tuesday in response to a batch of pleas seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages. The bench, which also included Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha, delivered four separate judgements.

The court said that it cannot create a legal framework for queer couples because that is the job of Parliament. The bench also said that there is no fundamental right to marriage. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the Centre will form a committee to decide the rights and entitlements of persons in queer unions.

After the judgement was delivered, advocate Rohin Bhatt, one of the lawyers representing the petitioners in the case, said that the verdict has relegated the community to an “unsympathetic” legislature.

“Today the court has reaffirmed that queer citizens will be relegated to an unsympathetic legislature and an apathetic executive,” Bhatt said in a tweet. “We are second class citizens, no matter how many judicial platitudes say otherwise. We will…

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha’s plea to stay his eviction from a government-allotted bungalow, reported Bar and Bench.

Chadha had moved the High Court after the additional district judge of Patiala House court on October 5 dismissed an interim order of April 18 that directed the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to halt his eviction.

Additional District Judge Sudhanshu Kaushik had said that Chadha had no right to stay in the bungalow as it was only a privilege given to him as an MP.

In September 2022, Chadha was allotted a type-VII accommodation bungalow in Delhi. The Opposition party’s MP was earlier allotted a type VI bungalow. In March, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat told him that the allotment had been cancelled as the type-VII bungalow was higher than his entitlement, reported Bar and Bench. He was then allotted another flat.

Following this, Chadha sought direction against the decision to cancel his type-VII bungalow allotment. The Patiala House Court granted him interim relief on April 18.

However, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat sought a review of the order on the grounds that procedure action was not followed in filing the suit under the Civil Procedure Code. Section 80(1) of the Civil Procedure Code says that a two-month notice has to be…
