Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen’s campaign at the All England Open came to an end of Saturday after he lost to Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles semi-finals.

Sen, who finished as runner up in the 2022 edition, lost to Christie 12-21, 21-10, 15-21 in an hour and eight minutes.

It was a close start to the match with both sides exchanging the lead in the opening game. Christie began to stitch together consecutive points to take a 9-7 and then a 15-8 lead. Sen could not muster a comeback as Christie took the first game 21-12.

The second game was a one-sided affair as Sen raced away with the lead. Leading 4-3, he won 13 of the next 14 points to take a 17-4 lead. His Indonesian opponent could not find a way back as Sen won the second game 21-10 to force a decider.

Both players exchanged points at the start of the third game. However, Christie took the lead at the mid-game break at 11-8. The 2018 Asian Games gold medallist held on to his lead and at 15-12 won five points…

Political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed disappointment at the Election Commission not announcing the dates for Assembly elections in the Union territory.

On Saturday, the poll panel announced the dates of the Lok Sabha elections and said that voting will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. It also said that Assembly polls for Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim will be held simultaneously with the general elections.

The results of the Assembly polls will also be announced on June 4 along with those of the Lok Sabha elections.

While announcing the schedule, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar cited security reasons for not holding the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir simultaneously with the parliamentary polls.

Following this, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah said there was “something fishy” in the decision, reported PTI.

“If there are conducive conditions for the parliamentary election, how is it not alright for the state election?” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister told the news agency.

His son and party leader Omar Abdullah took to social media to say that the Election Commission was “unable to” conduct Assembly polls in the Union territory despite acknowledging that they are due.

Is speaking favourably about Pakistan a criminal offence in India?

Four men arrested in Karnataka last week for allegedly shouting “Pakistan zindabad”, long live Pakistan, were the latest in a rapidly lengthening list of persons prosecuted across the country in the last few years for allegedly chanting pro-Pakistan slogans.

However, on March 7, the Supreme Court, in a judgment, outlined that extending good wishes to Pakistan, or to any other country, for that matter, is not a criminal offence.

The court stated in the judgment in no uncertain terms that the country’s police machinery is disregarding the fundamental right of citizens to freedom of speech.

Scroll explains what the judgment said and why there is no legal basis for criminalising pro-Pakistan statements.

Supreme Court judgment

The Supreme Court’s judgment, delivered by a two-judge bench comprising Justices AS Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, stems from a first information report filed in 2022 by the Maharashtra police against Javed Ahmad Hajam, a Kashmiri professor who was at that time teaching at the Sanjay Ghodawat College in Kolhapur.

He had been booked under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code that prohibits acts that promote disharmony or enmity between different groups based on religion, race, language, caste or community. In other words, it makes it illegal to engage in activities, make statements or…

Good evening, friends. I must begin by thanking the committee of the Dr Aroon Tikekar Centre for Advanced Studies at the Asiatic Society of Mumbai for inviting me to be the keynote speaker at this evening’s event. Dr Tikekar was a friend from my Times of India days. He would come up to my cabin once in a while to have a chat, often an angry one. His sudden and unexpected death ended an association that had lasted some 20 years, in the course of which, as editor of Loksatta, Dr Tikekar had persuaded me to write two fortnightly columns for the paper, the first one on culture and the second on good manners.

Turning to the topic of my speech today, I must confess I was at a loss to know how to make it relevant to this year’s research projects, one of which is on Marathi literature and the other on Marathi theatre. Four memories came to my aid in quick succession to give me the title and substance of my talk. Memory number one was a visitor from Chennai, staying with friends in Walkeshwar, assuming that my mother tongue was Gujarati. He seemed surprised to hear it wasn’t. “But isn’t that the…

There will be an old finalist competing, but a new champion will be crowned when the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore meet at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, for the 2024 Women’s Premier League final.

The Capitals, runners-up last season, have a chance to make amends for the defeat to the Mumbai Indians last season.

The Bangalore team meanwhile, have been clutch in the important moments in their last two games and will hope to do it once again on Sunday.

Delhi Capitals

For the second season in a row, the Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals booked their slot in the Women’s Premier League final directly as the table toppers.

The Capitals started on a wrong foot, losing the season opener to Mumbai Indians in a repeat of the last year’s final, but have grown from strength to strength since. They won four matches in a row after the opening game before falling to a narrow one-run loss to UP Warriorz, courtesy a Deepti Sharma special.

They then bounced back well ever since, stopping a Richa Ghosh onslaught against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and rounding off their campaign with a clinical seven wicket-win over Gujarat Giants.

There have been hardly any problems for the Capitals in the competition. Almost all batters have chipped in with runs as and when…

In The Manchurian Candidate, little is as it appears to be. A medal of honour turns out to have been granted for a fake act of bravery. A politician who claims to be the last man standing between American values and Communism is a shill for his country’s enemies. A game of cards isn’t just a game of cards.

John Frankenheimer’s neve-wracking thriller is suffused with the feeling that comes from being in a topsy-turvy world. The Manchurian Candidate is filmed too in a style that accentuates its strangeness. The 1962 black-and-white classic is available on Prime Video.

The lensing, framing and lighting by Lionel Lindon have an unnatural, heightened quality. Dramatic close-ups, unusual compositions and the choice of lenses distort the actual scale of characters or their backdrops.

At times, the faces of characters crowd the screen. Events seen through the eyes of disturbed characters have a hallucinatory quality. The entire effect is one of throwing the viewew off guard – perfect for a film about deception, mind control and insidious propaganda.

Robert Shaw (Laurence Harvey) has returned in 1952 from the Korea War a mental wreck….

There is a fascinating short story in MT Vasudevan Nair’s latest book of autobiographical pieces and short storiesBear With Me, Ammawhere the narrator, a little boy, crawls out of his room in the night and raptly watches as his three grandmothers sing and dance in the courtyard. When he is ordered to go back to his room, he complies, only to quickly sneak out again. As the grandmothers clap their hands and swerve their feet in a swift rhythm, he looks on. In an instant, three other grandmothers appear out of a clump of trees, join the ongoing dance, and begin to sing a different song than the one being sung. Some commotion ensues. When the boy takes another look at the courtyard, extra carefully this time, he no longer sees the three grandmothers that had abruptly materialised. He discovers, later, that he was taken inside and put to bed as he sat burning with fever – it was all a dream, a vision. The three bonus grandmothers were performers never in the courtyard but only inside his head.

Like the narrator in the story who takes his three grandmothers and makes up three more, MT effects something similar with this book: to take…

The Election Commission’s list of 1,313 buyers of electoral bonds released on March 14 is dominated by companies. But 368 buyers are individuals, who collectively bought electoral bonds worth Rs 378 crore. Lakshmi Mittal, the executive chairman of ArcelorMittal, leads the pack of individual donors

The top 10 individuals bought bonds worth Rs 172 crore – 45% of the total bought by individuals. They are businessmen spanning sectors like aviation, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and communication, though four of the 10 are fairly obscure.

1 Lakshmi Mittal

The 73-year-old steel magnate accounts for 9.2% of all electoral bonds bought by individuals, purchasing 35 bonds of Rs 1 crore each on April 8, 2019. This window of purchase was just ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Mittal, who lives in London, sparked a controversy after he made donations to the Labour Party in 2001 and 2007. The first time, he gave the party 125,000 pounds. The second time, he donated two million pounds,

2 Laxmidas Vallabh Asmita Mercha

The Reporters Collective identified “Mercha” as Laxmidas Vallabhdas Merchant and Asmita Merchant, who are “related to each other”. Merchant is the group controller at Reliance Industries. He bought electoral bonds of Rs 25 crore in November 2023. The report said he…

In 2020, the murder of George Floyd in the US served as a catalyst for the global Black Lives Matter movement. It sparked widespread protests against police brutality and systemic racism. It also ignited debates about historical symbols of oppression, such as statues of figures associated with racial injustices.

These debates presented colonial statues in Africa as having been contested and toppled for many years, ever since African states gained independence. Indeed, colonial statues were at the heart of the colonial world, symbolising its violence, white supremacy and the erasure of precolonial history. But colonial monuments in African public spaces have much more complex and often overlooked histories.

As a scholar of African heritage, I recently published a study examining colonial statues and how they have been regarded in postcolonial Africa. My historical investigation highlights three major phases.

First, in the era of independence of African states, from the 1950s to 1980, some statues were removed from public spaces, but many remained.

Second, the 1990s and 2000s were marked by the “return of empires”: statues that had been removed were put back in public spaces and new neo-colonial monuments were constructed.

Third, the renewed challenges to colonial statues from the 2010s faced some strong resistance. Understanding this history is crucial, as it exposes…

A Delhi court on Friday refused to stay two summons issued to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by a magisterial court on a complaint by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with allegations of money laundering in the Delhi liquor policy case, reported Live Law.

The central law enforcement agency had approached the Rouse Avenue Court claiming that the Aam Aadmi Party leader had not appeared before it for questioning despite eight summons issued to him since November 2.

On March 7, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Divya Malhotra had directed Kejriwal to be present in the court on March 16.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader had sought an interim stay against the summons. However, Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Syal on Friday directed Kejriwal to approach the metropolitan magistrate with his request for an exemption from deposing before the Enforcement Directorate.

Syal also directed the Aadmi Party leader to appear physically in court on Saturday. Kejriwal’s revision petitions against the summons will be heard next on March 30.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on February 27 for the eighth time and asked to appear before it on March 4, which he failed to do. He had skipped the agency’s seventh summons on February 26. Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi…

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the Centre’s electoral bonds scheme to facilitate “the world’s largest extortion racket”, reported The Hindu.

The Wayanad MP also alleged that the funds acquired by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party through the scheme were used to divide the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra. He claimed that the funds were also used by the BJP to topple Opposition governments in other states.

Gandhi said this while addressing reporters in Bhiwandi, in Maharashtra’s Thane district, during the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, a day after the Election Commission published details about the purchasers and recipients of electoral bonds on its website.

“[Electoral bonds are] nothing but the biggest extortion racket and corruption scandal in the world,” Gandhi said. “Months after a contract is given or days after the Central Bureau of Investigation or Enforcement Directorate raids take place, the companies suddenly start giving electoral bonds to the BJP.”

To be sure, the electoral bonds data submitted to the Election Commission by State Bank of India does not include the unique serial numbers of the bonds matching them to their recipient political parties. However, the BJP has received the lion’s share of political funding through the scheme.

Last week, the…

The revelation that his lottery empire is the single largest buyer of electoral bonds in India has made Santiago Martin infamous across the country. But if a person close to him is to be believed, the Tamil Nadu-based businessman is relieved that the scale of his contributions to political parties has become known.

Martin’s company, Future Gaming and Hotel Services PR, purchased Rs 1,368 crore worth electoral bonds in 22 phases, data released by the Election Commission on Thursday showed.

A close associate of the man known as the “lottery king” said he was frustrated by the endless financial demands made by political parties and hopes this will now stop.

The attempt to cast himself as a victim of political rent-seeking, however, sits at odds with Martin’s links to parties across the spectrum.

His son Charles Jose Martin is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, while his wife Leema Rose is with the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi, or IJK, an ally of the BJP.

Martin’s son-in-law Adhav Arjun is with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi or VCK, an Ambedkarite party which is part of the Congress-led INDIA alliance, for whom he designs election strategy.

Far from indicating ideological sympathies, his family’s dalliance with politics appears to be guided by the classic investor’s logic:…

In 1988, Upamanyu Chatterjee gave his Indian reader English, August, a coming-of-age story that was also a sharp critique of Indian bureaucracy and commentary on the unbridgeable divide between those who held privilege in urban India and those that they attempted to govern in the rural hinterland. He also gave us Agastya Sen, 24 years old, newly appointed to the Indian Administrative Service and entirely removed from the realities of the provincial town he was posted to. English, August was a realistic (if acerbic) portrait of India in the ‘80s and its protagonist was the quintessential outsider, aware of his difference and distance from the people and the milieu surrounding him.

In his latest book, which, in Chatterjee’s own words, is a true story that is a work of fiction, we have yet another protagonist who is an outsider and is acutely conscious of it. The world of Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning of Life is a radical departure from the author’s previous work. Instead of dark humour and generous lashings of cynicism, the narrative situates itself in the stability of faith. It tells the story of Lorenzo Bonifacio, a resident of Aquilinia, Italy, who, at age 21, embarks on a spiritual quest with a visit to…

In an acting career that began when he was six years old and spans genres, Kunal Kemmu has consistently proven his comic timing. So it’s apt that after acing roles in such films as 99, Go Goa Gone, Golmaal 3 and Lootcase, Kemmu’s directorial debut is the comedy Madgaon Express.

Written and directed by Kemmu, the March 22 release stars Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi and Avinash Tiwary as three men whose Goa holiday is upended when they get enmeshed with drug dealers. Kemmu intended to act in Madgaon Express, but an offer to direct gave him an unexpected opportunity, he told Scroll.

Why did you decide to direct a film at this point?

I did not pitch this film as a director. I pitched it as an actor-writer. But every time somebody would read it, they would ask, why aren’t you directing? Because it’s written with such clarity and they saw it come alive during narrations. A similar thing happened with [producer] Excel Entertainment.

Secretly, I was very happy because it’s not an easy thing, and these producers were ready to put money into it. They reassured me saying that having worked with many first-time filmmakers, they would get me all the support I need. Of course I said yes, because you have imagined the film, imagined helming…

As we approach Holi, the festival of colours, it would be an opportune moment to listen closely to the tabla accompaniment provided for the hori or holi songform. Broadly, hori or holi is sung by Hindustani vocalists in different compositional structures. One of these resembles the bol banaav thumri structure, and therefore, lends itself to more expansive elaboration.

Since the first variety resembles the bol banaav thumri, this hori or holi is sung in a slow-paced 14-matra Deepchandi taal or the 16-matra Jat or Aadhaa taal. The melodic and textual elaboration is very much like the bol banaav thumri and the presentation ends with the laggi-chanti/laggi-nada/laggi section played by the tabla player.

The following track features a hori sung by the inimitable thumri exponent Siddheshwari Devi. It is set to the Jat taal and includes a laggi section towards the end. Conventionally, the tabla player ends the laggi section with a tihai and returns to the original taal that the vocal composition is set in.

Additionally, the tabla player is expected to return to the original pace that the presentation began with. However, in the case of the present hori, the tabla player returns to the original taal but plays it at a faster pace.
