In the concluding episode of our three-part series on tabla maestro Munir Khan’s 75th birth anniversary celebrations held in Mumbai in 1950, we listen to recordings of a few other exponents who were featured in the two sessions at this single-day function.
We begin with Agra gharana guru and composer Khadim Hussain Khan. He sings two compositions in the raag Maluha Kedar. The first one is set to vilambit or slow Ektaal and the second one is a tarana set to Teentaal.
The second track features Azmat Hussain Khan (vocal), an exponent of the Khurja, Jaipur-Atrauli and Agra gharanas. He sings a composition set to a medium tempo 16-matra Teentaal in the raag Darbari Kanada.
On the next track, Ramrao Parsatvar plays the rarely heard instrument called jaltarang. He plays a composition in the raag Yaman set to Teentaal, which is accelerated towards the end to incorporate the climactic jhala section.

Kushiara and Other Poems is Rimi Nath’s debut collection of poetry. Named after the River Kushiara, flowing through Karimganj town and separating Assam from Bangladesh, the collection comprises 60 poems of rare musical quality. I first read it in 2021. I did not plan to write about it.
But after reading it the first time, I found myself going back to it again and again: a poem here, a poem there now and then. I was intrigued. What was it in this book that drew me into its world this way? I decided to find out by having one more careful reading.
The first thing that strikes me about this collection is its unpretentiousness. This impression is heightened by the book’s epigraph, a quotation from Rabindranath Tagore: “These paper boats of mine are meant to dance on the ripples of hours, and not reach any destination.”
As I read on, I realise that this is, in fact, the reigning spirit of Kushiara. There is no attempt to impress, no attempt to make any claim about anything. The very first poem will bear this out:
‘That is not our country,’ the father says
Pointing his finger across the River Kushiara
The child, in her anxiety and wonder, utters

Months after Argentina won the 2022 Fifa World Cup, Argentinian journalist Hernan Casciari and cartoonist Liniers joined hands to create an animated series on the star of the final in Qatar – goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
As per a report in La Nacion, the series will tell the story of an 11-year-old Martinez who discovers he has a superpower which helps him accurately predict the direction in which he should dive to stop a penalty or freekick.
Titled ‘Emi On Off,’ the story will revolve around the dilemma a young Martinez faces on whether using his superpower during football matches is cheating and is expected to culminate with a reconstruction the 2022 World Cup final, which Argentina won on penalities against France.
The 30-year-old Martinez saved a total of four penalties on that fateful day in Qatar to lead Argentina to their first World Cup triumph in 36 years.

The idea for an aminated series on the goalkeeper was sown after Martinez revealed having developed insomina following the night of the final to Casciari.

Pity those who have watched the Korean thriller Blind (2011) or its Tamil remake Netrikann, which came out on Disney+ Hotstar in 2021. For them, the impact of the Hindi version, also called Blind and premiered on JioCinema, is undermined by sheer familiarity.
Those who haven’t seen the original movie are in for a slick but unfeeling reworking, a weak heroine, a glowering villain, a charming secondary character, and an adorable guide dog. The setting is Glasgow, where police officer Gia (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) loses her sight in an accident. Discouraged from re-joining work, Gia gets the chance to prove her sleuthing skills when she runs into a serial killer.
Introduced early in the film, the murderer known only as The Driver (Purab Kohli) torments Gia when not dispatching his victims in gruesome ways. Police investigator Prithvi (Vinay Pathak) takes Gia’s help in tracking down the antagonist. Their efforts are boosted by Nikhil (Shubham Saraf). Gia’s four-legged friend Elsa does her bit too.
The largely faithful remake is filmed clinically, perhaps too much so. While better-looking than the Tamil production, Blind is unable to drum up the emotional heft needed in portraying the crucial relationships that develop between Gia and Prithvi and Gia and Nikhil.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday suggested that even a short documentary on the Quran with discrepancies would cause a stir, Bar and Bench reported.
“If you make even a short documentary on the Quran depicting wrong things, then you will see what can happen,” a bench of Justices Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Shree Prakash Singh said while hearing petitions against the Hindi film Adipurush.
The judges, however, clarified that the court was concerned about the sentiments of all religions equally and they should not be depicted in a bad light.
Directed by Om Raut, Adipurush is an adaption of the Hindu epic Ramayana. It stars Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh and Devdutta Nage.
The film has been criticised on social media for its gangster film-style dialogue, the over-reliance on visual effects and its casting choices. Many pointed out that the dialogues in the film are not only anachronistic to the period setting but also disrespectful of the source material.
Protests were also held across India against the film. Following the criticism, the makers of Adipurush announced that they will rewrite portions of the dialogue and issue new versions of the film.

The Kerala High Court on Thursday stayed the proceedings in a sexual harassment case against Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan, Bar and Bench reported.
A bench of Justice K Babu passed the order after the court was told that a settlement has been reached between the complainant and the actor.
This is the second time the High Court has stayed proceedings in the case before the Magistrate court.
The woman had filed a police complaint accusing the actor of sexual harassment in 2017. She alleged that Mukundan molested her when she went to his home for a script-reading session. Mukundan also filed a case against the woman, alleging that she has cooked up the charges.
In May 2021, the Kerala High Court had stayed the trial proceedings based on an affidavit about a purported settlement between the parties.
However, the order was lifted in February after the complainant told the court that the stay had been issued on the basis of a false submission by the actor’s lawyer.
The complainant had said that she did not sign the affidavit.
On May 23, the High Court had refused to quash the criminal proceedings against Mukundan and directed that the lower court should dispose of the case within three months, according to Bar and Bench.

Under the Shadow is, despite its crisp length, a slow-burner. British-Iranian director Babak Anvari takes his time setting up the situation that will confront Shideh and her daughter Dorsa. We are supposed to be in horror territory, but Anvari is in no hurry to get there.
The wait is necessary, and worthwhile. The plot’s political context itself is the scariest thing about Under the Shadow (2016).
The Farsi-language movie is available on Netflix. Anvari’s directing credits include the crime thriller I Came By, which is also on Netflix.
Under the Shadow is set in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War, which dragged on between 1980 and 1988 and claimed countless lives. Coming soon after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, the war cemented autocratic rule alongside creating a cult around hyper-nationalism and martyrdom, compelling numerous Iranians to flee a country they no longer recognised.

When the election schedule was announced, NTR and his men were at Nirmal (then in Adilabad district, now a separate district). The Chaitanya Ratham immediately changed its route and headed towards Hyderabad. The selection of party candidates is a very important process requiring an elaborate exercise in any election.

Siddhartha Deb returns to fiction after over a decade with The Light at the End of the World (Context/Westland). Like a hall of distorted mirrors, the book reflects in intriguing, unsettling ways the contemporary reality of India – and traces it back to many moments of apocalypse in the nation’s history.
In a conversation with Scroll, Deb, who teaches journalism for a living, spoke of arriving at the form of the novel, what fiction allows him to do, and his ambivalent relationship with the news. Excerpts from the interview:
What was the original impulse for writing this novel? How long did it take you?
I wanted to read a big South Asian novel that engaged with the strangeness of our times in a formally inventive manner. I did not think that the realism dominating literary fiction was capable of quite handling this. I wanted something weird, something crossing over from literary fiction to genre fiction and back, something that moved between past, present, and future, and because this book didn’t seem to exist, I just began writing it.
