A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha till April 23 in the Delhi liquor policy case, reported PTI.

Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was denied interim bail in the case a day earlier.

She was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate from her Hyderabad residence on March 15. On March 26, she was sent to judicial custody till April 9 after the agency said her further custodial interrogation was not required.

The Enforcement Directorate has alleged that Kavitha, among others, conspired with senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia, to secure favours in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped liquor excise policy of the national capital.

Kavitha is alleged to be a part of a so-called South Group that paid “Rs 100 crore to the leaders of AAP” in exchange for favours related to the policy through businessman Vijay Nair.

On Monday, Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Kavitha, referred to section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and said that it allowed courts to grant interim relief to women accused in such cases despite the rigorous bail conditions under the Act. He also said that her 16-year-old son was currently…

Indian chess Grandmasters Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and his elder sister Vaishali were the only two players to score wins in the third round of the open and women’s section, respectively, of the 2024 Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada on Saturday.

It was also their first wins in the competition.

Praggnanandhaa, playing with black pieces, beat compatriot Vidit Gujrathi, who had stunned world No 3 Hikaru Nakamura a day earlier in Round 2.

The win for 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa takes him to an overall score of 1.5 after he drew Alireza Firouzja in the opening round, followed by a loss to Gukesh Dommaraju on Friday.

Like her younger brother, 22-year-old Vaishali also bounced back from a loss in the second round to beat Bulgarian player Nurgyul Salimova. Vaishali had started her campaign with a draw against compatriot Koneru Humpy, followed by a loss to China’s Tan Zhongyi.

As for the other Indians competing in the tournament, that serves as a gateway to the World Championships match in their respective categories, Humpy drew against Tan while using white pieces.

In the open section, Gukesh played out a draw with reigning champion Ian Nepomniachtchi in a match that saw some confusion due to a faulty clock. The arbiter eventually had to change…

Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Saturday said that he will take legal action against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor after the latter accused him of bribing voters with cash.

Chandrasekhar and Tharoor are contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram constituency.

On Saturday, Tharoor claimed in an interview that he had received information from various sources, including “certain important community leaders and parish priests” suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party was trying to influence voters with cash, The Hindu reported.

However, the Congress MP expressed doubts whether those who have allegedly received the money will be willing to come forward with evidence. Tharoor also alleged that the BJP could have spent “20, 30 or even 100 times” the amount that the other candidates have spent on campaigning.

Soon after this, Chandrasekhar challenged Tharoor to disclose to whom he gave the money.

“With his baseless allegation, he has also damaged the reputation of religious and community organisations in the [state] capital,” the BJP leader said in a social media post. “Rest assured, I will ensure that this slander is countered using all legal means. It’s disgraceful to see a three-time MP stooping to third-rate politics in his desperation.”

In her works, the Hindi writer Anjali Kajal has consistently explored how women both resist as well as reaffirm patriarchy and casteism. Originally from Ludhiana, she is now based in Delhi. Ma is Scared is her first book to be translated into English. The stories, selected and translated by Kavita Bhanot, reflect a writing career spanning two and a half decades. While her prose is largely unadorned, it paints evocative, true-to-life portraits of womanhood and motherhood at the intersections of various identities in a modern India that is still holding on to outdated notions and ideas in the name of tradition.

The legacies of misogyny

Stories such as “Deluge” and “Ma is Scared” drive the everydayness of misogyny and sexism home in a chilling manner. Both are so ingrained in society that any female excursion into the public space is met with resounding waves of male entitlement, misbehaviour and, in the worst cases, outright abuse. In “Deluge”, Pammi is traumatised by men whom she sees as wolves “waiting to pounce”. Her father’s was “the only bearable touch Pammi remembered receiving from a man in her life”. In a bid to escape the trap of inevitable marriage, she runs away from home at the age of nineteen only…

The Gujarat High Court on Friday reprimanded the state government for filing a first information report against a contractual sanitation worker for “wilfully” entering a septic tank despite a prohibition on manual scavenging, Live Law reported on Saturday.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee was hearing a public interest litigation by Ahmedabad-based nongovernmental organisation Manav Garima that is seeking strict implementation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.

Manual scavenging – or the practice of removing human excreta by hand from sewer lines or septic tanks – is banned under the law, but the practice remains prevalent in several parts of the country.

A sanitation worker had died and another suffered serious injuries while cleaning a septic tank at the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute’s Bhavnagar campus in November. The state had booked the surviving worker for illegally and “wilfully” entering the septic tank.

The state government had conducted an inquiry into the incident on the court’s direction and submitted a report stating the actions taken and actions proposed to be taken.

On Friday, the government shared the findings of the inquiry with the court and said that the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation had not deployed a supervisor at the site…

In the deeply religious Hindu household in which I grew up in Kolkata, there were at least 132 photographs of various gods adorning the dilapidated walls of our ground-floor home. The most prominent of them, in our multipurpose living room, were the standing trio of Ram, Lakshman and Sita along with a genuflecting Hanuman, enclosed in a glass chamber with a light fitted inside.

At dusk, like a ritual, before turning on the lights in the other rooms, we would first turn on the light for this photograph. Ash smeared on my forehead, every evening I would pray to the ensemble of gods as my sisters sang the Hanuman Chalisa. The melody and rhythm of every version of this song that I heard later in life seemed off. For peace and for humanity to be free of strife, my grandmother read the Sundara Kandam in Tamil everyday.

My ill-tempered father worked all his life at the Allahabad Bank with a patriotic zeal for nation building and took great pride in his uncompromising integrity. A deeply religious man, he would fondly recount how our forefathers had constructed a Ram temple in our ancestral village in Tamil Nadu.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi on Saturday moved the Himachal Pradesh High Court challenging the returning officer’s decision to declare the winner of the Rajya Sabha elections in the state in February through a draw of lots, Live Law reported.

On February 28, Singhvi had lost the election to the Upper House to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Harsh Mahajan. Only one Rajya Sabha seat in the state was up for election.

At that point, the Congress had 40 MLAs in the 68-member Assembly. While the BJP had 25 seats, the remaining three members were independents. The Rajya Sabha election resulted in a tie with both candidates securing 34 votes.

After the tie, the names of Singhvi and Mahajan were written on separate slips and placed into a box, as per Rule 75 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961. This was in the presence of the candidates and the polling agents. One slip was randomly drawn from the box.

The slip had Singhvi’s name. Singhvi was then eliminated from the selection process, leading the returning officer to declare Mahajan as the winner. Mahajan was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 3.

Singhvi has challenged this decision of the returning officer.

Rule 75 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, deals with the counting of votes where only one seat is…

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday withdrew his call for a protest march from Ladakh’s Leh to the Line of Actual Control planned for Sunday.

The march was meant to highlight the scale of the alleged Chinese intrusions in Ladakh and the land taken over by Indian corporates. Local tribal leaders were to lead the protest.

Ahead of the protest, the administration of the Union Territory had imposed prohibitory orders against gatherings under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the area.

Under these circumstances, “chances of violence are very high, which could then be used to label this peaceful movement anti-national”, Wangchuk said in a social media post on Saturday.

On March 26, Wangchuk ended his 21-day hunger strike that demanded statehood for Ladakh and the protection of the Himalayan ecology. Wangchuk and other civil society leaders in Ladakh are also trying to press the Union government to implement the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for Ladakh.

The Sixth Schedule under Article 244 (Administration of Scheduled Areas and Tribal Areas) of the Constitution guarantees certain protections for land and a nominal autonomy for citizens in designated tribal areas. In Ladakh, while more than 97% of the population belong to Scheduled Tribes, Kargil is a Muslim-majority region.

In less than two weeks, Indians will vote in a sprawling seven-phase Lok Sabha election that starts on April 19 and ends on June 1.

While general elections have always been held in summer, this year the Indian Meteorological Department has forecast higher than average temperatures and almost double the number of heatwave days in this period – 10-20 days, as against four-eight days seen every summer.

Political workers campaigning in this heat, voters who attend large political rallies to hear leaders speak, and those who will queue up at polling booths – all risk exposure as they take part in one of the world’s biggest democratic exercises.

Is India prepared for an election in extreme heat conditions?

Scroll analysed IMD data to indicate how states voting in the first and second phases of election will be affected by the heat. On both days of voting – April 19 and April 26 – constituencies spread across north, western and central India may see temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius.

We spoke to experts who underlined the health risks involved for party workers and voters, and argued for clear, detailed directions from the Election Commission and health authorities.

So far, the Union health ministry has issued an advisory regarding mass gatherings. The Election…

NorthEast United kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win over the Kerala Blasters at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday.

NorthEast climb to seventh in the league table with 23 points from 20 matches, just one short of Chennaiyin FC who currently sit in the last available playoff spot.

Blasters, who have already qualified, continue in their horrid form – they have lost four of their last five matches.

The hosts however, left it late on Saturday to get the win. Nestor Albiach scored a sublime opening goal in the 84th minute, before MS Jithin tapped home their second goal seven minutes later to secure the win.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant rode on Dimitrios Petratos’ goal to beat Punjab FC 1-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in the Indian Super League match on Saturday, to keep alive their chances of winning the League Winners Shield.

The win for the Kolkata-club takes them to second place in the league table with 42 points from 20 matches. They trail only Mumbai City FC, who have 44 points, as both teams now have two matches left in the group stage – including a face-off at the Salt Lake Stadium on April 15.

The defeat for 11th-placed Punjab FC however, meant that they no longer have a chance of making it the playoffs.

Petratos’ goal came in the 42nd minute of the match. Subhasish Bose went for an adventurous shot from distance that was wayward and crashed straight into a crowded box. However, the ball sat up kindly for an onrushing Petratos, who played a first-time low shot that went through the legs of two defenders and past the outstretched Ravi Kumar in the Punjab goal.

Mohun Bagan’s next match is an away game against Bengaluru FC on April 11.

Last month, I spent several stimulating days in Mizoram. I had some knowledge of the state’s political history, met numerous Mizos in the course of my life, but never visited the state before.

I flew first to Guwahati, where I caught up with some old friends, gloried in my sightings of the Brahmaputra, and spoke on Gandhi to the teachers and students of the university. On the flight to Aizawl, I had naturally opted for a window seat. I watched with a growing sense of anticipation as the plane breached the white line of the clouds and flew perilously close to the hills before making a very assured landing. At the airport, I was made to fill out an “Inner Line Permit”, an archaic relic of the British raj which – at least for Indian citizens – is long past its sell-by date.

A passenger train is a better way to see the countryside than an aeroplane; but a car is perhaps an even better way still. The drive from Lengpui Airport to the state capital, Aizawl, took an hour and a half, long enough to get a sense of the landscape. The shape of the hills reminded me of the sub-Himalayan district, thenin Uttar…

Choice, Neel Mukherjee

A publisher, who is at war with his industry and himself, embarks on a radical experiment in his own life and the lives of those connected to him; an academic exchanges one story for another after an accident brings a stranger into her life; and a family in rural India have their lives destroyed by a gift. These three ingeniously linked but distinct narratives, each of which has devastating unintended consequences, form a breathtaking exploration of freedom, responsibility, and ethics. What happens when market values replace other notions of value and meaning? How do the choices we make affect our work, our relationships, and our place in the world?

India met a crushing defeat against Australia in the Cricket World Cup final in November, but the evening gave Achint Thakkar a reason to celebrate.

Aditya Gadhvi sang the Coke Studio Bharat track Khalasi live during the match. Composed and produced by Thakkar, who performs as Achint, and written by Saumya Joshi, Khalasi is Coke Studio Bharat’s third most streamed song on YouTube.

Between Khalasi and his earworm theme for Scam 1992 The Harshad Mehta Story, Achint has become one of Bollywood’s most sought after composers. His credits include Rocket Boys and Scoop. His score for the recent Disney+ Hotstar series Lootere punches together 1970s rock and roll and Somalian pop.

“The score was inspired by a lot of Arabic pop, Somalian disco, films like City of God and the opening sequence for Lord of War,” the 34-year-old composer told Scroll. “The theme track was cracked on the second or third attempt. Other versions became part of the score.”

Achint’s recognisable style includes a talent for traversing genres and mashing them idiosyncratically. The Scam 1992 theme, for instance, was unlike any Indian web series scores at the time.

This makes Achint a perfect fit for Vasan Bala’s equally genre-hopping films. After the soundtrack for Bala’s Monica, O My Darling (2022), Achint is…

Asma Khan, the author of Asma’s Indian Kitchen, brings life into a conversation with every word – she sits down and speaks to you as though she has known you forever. One can only imagine being a customer in her restaurant Darjeeling Express in Soho, London, and being immediately embraced by the arms of the warmest host – stories from her restaurant confirm the way she spurs her guests to eat more and eat better! Hearing about her easy intimacy with food, one might think she always had a deep familiarity with the kitchen – but actually the dream of cooking came to her late, after her childhood and early years in Calcutta, after her wedding, after moving to England, and, in many ways, after a PhD in Constitutional Law.

In her conversation with Scroll at the 2024 Jaipur Literature Festival, Asma Khan recalled her childhood and her journey to becoming a restaurateur, elaborated on her ethos of hospitality, and the subtle and thoughtful ways in which she’s built her practice, on the relationship she has to food – and through it – to the world, and offered her thoughts on many food- and industry-related matters. The unflinching verve and conviction in every response cement the image…
