Hundreds of patients, doctors and health workers are trapped inside Gaza city’s largest hospitals, including Al-Shifa, as fighting between the Israeli forces and militant groups continued around the medical facilities, officials in the region said on Monday. More than 30 patients, including three newborns, have died in the Al-Shifa hospital in the last three days due to the shortage of supplies and electricity, Reuters quoted Gaza health ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra as saying. Israel has accused Palestinian militant group Hamas of using the hospitals as cover for its fighters. United States President Joe Biden on Monday called on Tel Aviv to protect the civilians stranded inside the hospitals.

Udaipur tailor’s killers linked to BJP, alleges Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday alleged that the men who killed a tailor in Udaipur last year were linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party, ANI reported.

The tailor, Kanhaiya Lal, was killed on June 28 last year for purportedly sharing a social media post in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. She had made disparaging remarks about Prophet Muhammad during a television debate a month before.

The chief minister said that if the state police’s Special Operations Group had handled the case instead of the National Investigation Agency, the matter would have reached a logical conclusion. His statement came days ahead of Assembly elections in Rajasthan, which are slated to be held on November 25.

“No one knows what action the NIA has taken,” Gehlot told reporters in Jodhpur on Sunday. “If our SOG had pursued the case, the culprits would have been brought to justice by now.”

The chief minister said that as soon as he heard about the killing, he had cancelled all his scheduled events and left for Udaipur. “However, several top leaders of the BJP chose to attend an event in Hyderabad even after learning of the Udaipur incident,” he said.

India supports UN resolution against Israeli settlements in Palestine

India has voted in favour of a United Nations resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestine, reported PTI on Monday.

The draft resolution, titled “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan”, was passed on November 9 by the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly.

While 145 nations voted in favour of the resolution, seven voted against it and 18 abstained.

India was joined by Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, France, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the UK, among others, for condemning settlement activities in Palestine.

The UN resolution also condemns “the disruption of the livelihood of protected persons, the forced transfer of civilians and the annexation of land, whether de facto or through national legislation.”

It further reaffirmed that the Israeli settlements in Palestine were “illegal and an obstacle to peace and economic and social development”.

The United States, along with Canada, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Nauru voted against the resolution.

This comes as Israel’s war on Gaza entered its seventh week on Monday. At least 11,078 Palestinians, including 4,506 children, had been killed in the Israeli offensive in Gaza till Saturday. The Gaza health ministry has been unable to update the toll since then, reported the Associated Press.

Uttarakhand: Communication established with workers trapped after tunnel collapse

The authorities in Uttarakhand have established communication with workers who are trapped after a portion of an under-construction tunnel collapsed, officials told ANI on Monday.

The tunnel, located on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway, collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, leaving 40 workers trapped inside. The tunnel is part of the Char Dham Road Project to build all-weather roads in Uttarakhand.

Uttarkashi Circle Officer Prashant Kumar said that all the workers are safe and being supplied with oxygen through a pipe, according to NDTV. The authorities have also sent food and water to them, he added.

The National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, the police and the fire brigade are conducting rescue operations.

The Uttarkashi circle officer said that the debris at the spot is about 60 metres deep. “As we are clearing the debris, it is falling from above,” he said. “We have moved around 15 metres inside the tunnel, and 35 metres are still to be covered.”

NIA conducts raids in 10 states, UTs in human trafficking cases

The National Investigation Agency on Wednesday conducted raids across 10 states and Union Territories to crackdown on human trafficking networks involved in infiltrating “illegal migrants” through the India-Bangladesh border.

In the operation conducted along with the Border Security Force and state police forces, the National Investigation Agency arrested 44 people from 55 locations.

The raids were conducted in Assam, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura and West Bengal.

At a press conference, Assam Special Director General of Police Harmeet Singh said the operation began when the police in Assam’s Karimganj district identified a group of Rohingya travelling in a train from Tripura, reported The Indian Express.

It was found that they were “infiltrating” into the country through the India-Bangladesh border, he said. Karimganj shares a border with Bangladesh.

“After that, our vigil and operations increased and 450 illegal migrants, both Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, were stopped and turned back with the assistance of border guarding forces,” Singh said. “Enquiries and questioning increased afterwards, and it was found that the illegal migration was being facilitated and run by touts and middlemen.”

Manipur: Two of the four missing Kukis found dead in Imphal

Two of the four Kuki-Zo members of a soldier’s family, who were allegedly abducted by a Meitei mob from a security check post in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, have been found dead, officials told Scroll on Thursday.

Five Kuki-Zo people, including two women, were allegedly “forcibly taken away” on Tuesday morning by a Meitei mob near Kangchup Chingkhong village checkpost in the presence of the police and central security forces. They were travelling towards L Phaijang village for a wedding function. Their alleged abduction led to firing incidents and fresh protests in Manipur.

Manipur has been reeling under ethnic clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities. Over 200 people have been killed since the conflict broke out in early May. Nearly 60,000 persons have been forced to flee their homes.

Inspector General of Police Themthing Ngasangva told Scroll said that two bodies, one woman and a man, were found on Tuesday evening. Two others remain missing. The fifth member of the group, the 65-year-old father of the Indian Army soldier, was rescued by security forces on Tuesday and has been seriously injured. कांग्रेस नेता ने बुधवार को संवाददाओं से कहा कि इस बार मेरा टिकट नहीं होना था, लेकिन कार्यकर्ताओं के गुस्से को देखते हुए नेतृत्व को अंतिम समय में विचार कर दो बार लगातार हारने के बावजूद मुझे टिकट दिया है।

Kerala moves Supreme Court for the second time against governor’s delay in clearing bills

The Kerala government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court for the second time against Governor Arif Mohammed Khan for the delay in considering bills awaiting his assent, The Hindu reported.

The plea filed on Wednesday challenges a Kerala High Court judgement from last year that refused to fix a time limit for the governor to act on bills passed by the legislature.

Bills passed by legislatures become law only after the governor signs off on them. Article 200 of the Constitution gives governors the power to either grant their approval to a bill, reject it or, in some cases, reserve it for the president’s consideration.

The state government told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that the governor showing lack of urgency violates the fundamental right to life of the people of Kerala.

“Many of the bills involve immense public interest, and provide for welfare measures which would stand deprived and denied to the people of the State to the extent of the delay,” the state told the court. “Grave injustice is being done to the people of the state, as also to its representative democratic institutions by the governor by keeping bills pending for long periods of time, including three bills for longer than two years.”

बता दें की राहुल गांधी की पहली भारत जोड़ो यात्रा तमिलनाडु के कन्याकुमारी से 7 सितंबर 2022 को शुरू हुई थी और 30 जनवरी 2023 को जम्मू-कश्मीर के श्रीनगर में इसका समापन हुआ था। 145 दिन चली इस यात्रा ने करीब 3570 किमी का सफर तय किया था।

The new charges follow a complaint filed by Dehadrai, who is Moitra’s estranged partner, and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey alleging that Moitra took bribes from businessperson Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions against the Adani Group in Parliament. The Lok Sabha ethics committee is investigating the matter.

Dehadrai and Moitra are also locked in a legal battle for the custody of a dog named Henry they jointly owned when in a relationship.

In his fresh complaint to the police on Tuesday, Dehadrai said that Moitra went to his house unannounced on November 5 and November 6, days after she appeared before the ethics committee, reported NDTV.

“Given her past history of filing fraudulent criminal complaints against me [March 24 and September 23] and falsely alleging offences such as trespass, and criminal intimidation, and thereafter withdrawing the same in writing [on October 4], it is a grave cause for concern to me,” Dehadrai said.

Nitish Kumar apologises for remarks on birth control after backlash from women’s panel

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish on Wednesday apologised for his remarks about how educated women can ensure birth control through the withdrawal method, reported PTI.

This was after his remarks attracted a sharp reaction from the National Commission for Women on Tuesday who sought an apology from Kumar.

The Janata Dal (United) leader made the comments at the state Assembly explaining why Bihar’s fertility rate has dropped from 4.2% to 2.9%. Kumar said that an uneducated married woman often fails to adopt birth control methods and that leads to more children. But an educated woman can prevent getting pregnant through the withdrawal method, he said.

The chief minister was telling the Assembly that his policies that are aimed at improving education among girls have also helped with population control. However, he faced backlash from the women’s panel who described his comments as “crass”.

On Wednesday, Kumar told reporters that he had made the comments in earnest after he learnt that education played a key role in bringing down the fertility rate and curbing population growth.

Phone of journalist who reported on Adani Group targeted with Pegasus spyware, says reporters’ group

The smartphone of an Indian journalist, who works for the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, and reported on the alleged stock manipulation by the Adani Group, was allegedly targeted using Pegasus spyware in August, the organisation’s co-founder Drew Sullivan told Reuters on Tuesday.

According to Sullivan, hackers tried to plant the spyware made by Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO into journalist Anand Mangnale’s iPhone.

An internal forensic investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project linked the cyber attack against Mangnale’s phone to NSO’s Pegasus hacking tool.

Pegasus allows hackers to record calls, intercept messages and transform the phones into portable listening devices. The spyware is licensed to governments around the world.

“Whatever government is spying on the reporters, there’s no plausible explanation for that other than political gain,” Sullivan told Reuters.

He termed the attempt as “unacceptable and outrageous”.

In August, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project published a report by journalists Ravi Nair and Mangnale on alleged stock manipulation by the Adani Group. The report alleged that two investors who pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the Adani Group through offshore funds have close ties to the conglomerate’s promoters. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday handed out appointment letters to 25,000 of the 1.2 lakh school teachers recruited by the Bihar Public Service Commission in October. Even as Kumar was giving out the letters at an event in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, Opposition leaders alleged that the government had deprived Biharis by recruiting thousands of teachers from other states.

At the heart of the controversy is a domicile policy – or the lack of it. The Kumar government had allowed candidates from outside Bihar to take the examinations. But Bihari applicants have held protests, pointing out that Kumar’s deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, had promised when he was in the Opposition to reserve seats for local candidates.

Bihar is not alone in this nativist politics. Across India, several states now have domicile quotas for residents who have been born there or lived there for a long time. Many other states have heard demands for such a policy.
