HS Prannoy on Friday assured himself of a first BWF Badminton World Championships medal after beating defending champion and world No 1 Viktor Axelsen 13-21 21-15 21-16 in the men’s singles quarter-final in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The men’s doubles world No 2 pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out in the quarter-final stage, losing in straight games 18-21 19-21 to home favourites Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen.

Prannoy is now the only Indian left in the World Championships and he will become the fifth men’s singles player to win a Worlds medal after Prakash Padukone (bronze in 1983), B Sai Praneeth (bronze in 2019), Kidambi Srikanth (silver in 2021) and Lakshya Sen (bronze in 2021).

Prannoy came into the tie as the underdog not just because Axelsen was playing in front of his home crowd, but also because he was yet to drop a game in nine World Championships matches.

It was a difficult start for Prannoy with the world No 1 winning seven straight points to take a commanding 9-2 lead in the opening game. Axelsen looked fresh and Prannoy was unable to match up to his level, looking slightly sluggish and having his left shoulder heavily strapped.

As the two players headed into the interval…

Steve Smith’s 71 helped Australia recover from a batting collapse as the tourists frustrated England by battling to a first-innings lead in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Friday.

Australia were eventually bowled out for 295 on the second day, 12 runs ahead of England’s 283.

It looked as if England would enjoy a sizeable advantage as veteran seamer Stuart Broad sparked a slump that left Australia 185-7 from a comfortable 115-2 at lunch.

But Smith and Australia captain Pat Cummins (36) kept England at bay during an eighth-wicket stand of 54. Cummins then added 49 for the ninth wicket with Todd Murphy.

Off-spinner Murphy – recalled following last week’s rain-marred drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford – added to England’s woes with a sparkling 34 off just 39 balls.

Cummins eventually holed out off part-time spinner Joe Root, with rival skipper Ben Stokes throwing the ball back in over the rope at long-on to complete a fine catch.

‘Ebbed and flowed’

Australia, as the holders, are assured of retaining the Ashes at 2-1 up, and only need to avoid defeat at The Oval to secure their first Test series win away to England in 22 years.

“It’s ebbed and flowed the whole way, we’re pretty disappointed,” Smith told the BBC. “A…

India came up with a strong performance to hold England 1-1 in their third match in Barcelona at the ongoing 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation – International Tournament.

While Sam Ward scored an early goal for England in the 5th minute, India bounced back to level the scores in the 29th minute through Harmanpreet Singh.

After losing to the hosts and drawing with the Netherlands in their previous matches, India were looking for an elusive win and a spot in the tournament’s final. Despite starting positively, it was the Brits who got off to a good start, with Sam Ward scoring a stunning field goal in only the 5th minute of the game.

A tumbling James Oates crossed the ball from the right flank towards the goalpost, which Ward deflected into the post, giving England the lead. Pawan, who was filling in for PR Sreejesh and Krishan Bahadur Pathak in the goalpost, could do little to defend.

Despite the early setback, India showed great tenacity in the following minutes, defending admirably to save two consecutive PCs.

Meanwhile, the Indian forwardline continued their attack, earning a well-deserved PC in the 12th minute. Unfortunately for Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh, the umpire disallowed his goal for dangerous play.

India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden were knocked out from the men’s doubles event at Wimbledon on Thursday after falling to top seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Neal Skupsk of the United Kingdom in straight sets.

This was also the first time Bopanna had reached the men’s doubles semi-final since 2015.

Before losing 5-7, 4-6, the sixth seeds fought for an hour and 26 minutes. Ebden’s serve was broken at 5-5 for opponents to go 5-6. Eventually, Skupski served out the set.

As a result, the 43-year-old Bopanna missed becoming the oldest Grand Slam champion of the Open era in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.

The Indo-Australian pair had come up with a 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2 win over the Dutch team of Tallon Griekspoor and Bart Stevens, to set up a semi-final clash against Skupski and Koolhof. Bopanna and Ebden had bounced back after being a set down to defeat the duo in the quarterfinals.

In addition to winning two ATP titles with Ebden in men’s doubles, Bopanna had also advanced to the Australian Open final earlier this year with Sania Mirza. Bopanna, who finished second at the US Open in 2010, advanced to four semi-finals at major tournaments for men’s doubles.

Following this result, the Indian…

Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova will meet in Saturday’s Wimbledon women’s final, helping the All England avoid a potentially embarrassing diplomatic headache.

Tunisian world number six Jabeur fought back from a set and 4-2 down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3 to reach a second successive final at the tournament.

Czech left-hander Vondrousova ended Elina Svitolina’s dream of delivering a Grand Slam title for Ukraine with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 win, becoming the first unseeded woman to make the final in 60 years.

Had Sabalenka gone on to win the title on Saturday, she would have received the trophy from Princess Catherine, the wife of the heir to the British throne, a year after all Belarusian and Russian players were banned from the tournament following the invasion of Ukraine.

Belarus is a key ally of Moscow.

If she had reached the final, Svitolina would have maintained her policy of not shaking hands with Russian and Belarusian rivals in protest at the war.

Tunisian trailblazer Jabeur has now fought back three times from dropping the first set at this year’s tournament.

“I’m very proud of myself because maybe old me would have lost the match today and went back home already but I’m glad that I kept digging deep and finding…

As part of the post-tournament analysis, then India men’s hockey coach Graham Reid spotted a missing piece in the team’s preparation. India, favourites at the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup held earlier this year, lost in the crossover to New Zealand. Reid opined that the extra pressure of being hosts made matches “difficult to process.”

He added that the team would benefit from the presence of a mental conditioning coach.

India now have a new coach in Craig Fulton, and as the team prepares for a Four Nation tournament in Spain, the team will be armed with the presence of experienced mental conditioning expert Paddy Upton.

India rope in Paddy Upton as mental conditioning coach to work with men’s team

The South African, a compatriot of Fulton, is familiar with India. He had worked with the Indian men’s cricket team en route to their triumph on home soil at the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

He was also part of the South African men’s cricket team when they achieved the world No 1 ranking in all three formats of the game. He was also the head coach for the Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals for three years. Aside from cricket, Upton has also conducted mental conditioning workshops for Indian Super League FC Goa and FC Hyderabad,…

A stunning maiden ODI century from Bas de Leede fired Netherlands to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a dramatic four-wicket victory over Scotland.

Victory had looked unlikely at various points throughout the match for the Dutch, who knew they had to chase their target of 278 in just 44 overs owing to Scotland’s superior net run-rate.

But De Leede was a man inspired in Bulawayo, combining with Saqib Zulfiqar to crunch 40 runs off just 11 balls late on before Logan van Beek hit the winning run to clinch qualification.

Bas de Leede produced a dazzling first-ever ODI ton to fire Netherlands to the World Cup with a dramatic four-wicket victory over Scotland.

De Leede starred with bat and ball, picking up a first ODI five-for before smashing 123 with the bat to haul the Netherlands home and punch their tickets to India later this year.

Having put Scotland into bat, Netherlands made the perfect start as Logan van Beek (1/49) struck in the first over to dismiss Matthew Cross (0).

But Scotland steadied the ship through Christopher McBride (32) and Brandon McMullen (106) before opener McBride became the first of De Leede’s five scalps, pulling straight into the hands of Van Beek at midwicket with George Munsey (9)…

Pity those who have watched the Korean thriller Blind (2011) or its Tamil remake Netrikann, which came out on Disney+ Hotstar in 2021. For them, the impact of the Hindi version, also called Blind and premiered on JioCinema, is undermined by sheer familiarity.

Those who haven’t seen the original movie are in for a slick but unfeeling reworking, a weak heroine, a glowering villain, a charming secondary character, and an adorable guide dog. The setting is Glasgow, where police officer Gia (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) loses her sight in an accident. Discouraged from re-joining work, Gia gets the chance to prove her sleuthing skills when she runs into a serial killer.

Introduced early in the film, the murderer known only as The Driver (Purab Kohli) torments Gia when not dispatching his victims in gruesome ways. Police investigator Prithvi (Vinay Pathak) takes Gia’s help in tracking down the antagonist. Their efforts are boosted by Nikhil (Shubham Saraf). Gia’s four-legged friend Elsa does her bit too.

The largely faithful remake is filmed clinically, perhaps too much so. While better-looking than the Tamil production, Blind is unable to drum up the emotional heft needed in portraying the crucial relationships that develop between Gia and Prithvi and Gia and Nikhil.

The most noteworthy performance is by Vinay Pathak, who…

According to reports, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, is set to declare the artificial sweetener aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”.

Aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than sugar and is one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners. It’s used particularly in “low calorie” or “diet” foods and beverages, but is contained in a wide variety of products including drinks, ice creams, chewing gums, confectionery, sauces and snacks.

We don’t have further information yet on what evidence the International Agency for Research on Cancer will base this new classification on, but the WHO will publish the full data on July 14.

While reports like these can understandably be worrying, there’s no reason to panic at this stage.

Aspartame was first approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1974, and ever since then there have been claims made about its potential effects on health.

Over time, aspartame has not only been linked to cancer, but also to other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, blindness, seizures, memory loss, depression, anxiety, birth defects and death.

However, frequent evaluations by regulatory agencies such as the WHO, the Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority have found no evidence to support these assertions.

So far, the regulators have all agreed…

Israeli forces say they have completed a 48-hour military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin – the largest in two decades. Beginning on Monday, July 3, the Israel Defence Force hit the city with drone strikes, sending in hundreds of troops and bulldozing through the narrow streets. Two days later, 12 Palestinians were reported dead and 100 injured. One Israeli soldier was killed.

In what was billed as an operation to clear Jenin of terrorists, Israeli forces arrested Palestinian militants, seized weapons and neutralised improvised explosive devices. The operation caused widespread damage to Jenin’s crowded refugee camp, which is home to 14,000 people in less than half a square kilometre – most of whom are descendants of Palestinians dispossessed of their land and homes when Israel was created in 1948.

While the residents return to assess and repair the damage, two questions persist: why invade Jenin at all – and why now?

Why target Jenin

Jenin has long been a central site of Palestinian armed struggle. During the second Palestinian intifada (uprising), 28 suicide attacks in Israeli towns and cities were reportedly planned and launched between October 2000 to April 2002 from Jenin.

In April 2002, the refugee camp in Jenin was attacked as part of Operation Defensive Shield, the largest Israeli military…

Freedom of expression is being misused by anti-India elements in Canada and elsewhere, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday amid a row over a controversial poster released by pro-Khalistani leaders in the North American country.

The poster is an invitation to a rally titled “Khalistan Freedom Rally” scheduled on July 8 in Toronto. Titled “Kill India”, the poster accuses Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and Consul General of India in Toronto, Apoorva Srivastava, of assassinating Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Similar invitations carrying photographs of Indian diplomats in the UK and Australia have also emerged.

On Tuesday, India had summoned Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay over the poster. A day before, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had urged Western countries not to give space to pro-Khalistan supporters, arguing that it would be bad for the relationship between the nations.

Earlier on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said that citizens in the country had the freedom of expression, but that the country would push back against violence and extremism in all its forms, the Hindustan Times.

Riots broke out in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, following the lethal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy named as Nahel M. An investigation into his death is ongoing but the situation has already triggered protest and anger. Whatever the investigation concludes, the incident forms part of a complex, deep-rooted problem in France.

It raises the memory of the violence that spread across the city’s suburbs in 2005, lasting more than three weeks and forcing the country into a state of emergency. Many of the issues behind the unrest back then remain unresolved to this day and have potentially been aggravated by ever worsening relations between the police and the public.

During my extensive fieldwork in the suburban estates of Paris, Lyon and Marseille I have seen and heard first-hand the grievances that are now being cried out on the streets of Nanterre.

The suburbs and poverty

Certain suburbs of large French cities have, for decades, suffered from what has been labelled the worst “hypermarginalisation” in Europe. Poor-quality housing and schooling combine with geographical isolation and racism to make it virtually impossible for people to stand a chance at improving their circumstances.

Evidence has long shown that people living in poor suburbs can expect to face discrimination based on the very fact of living in those…

It has been a long month for the Indian men’s national football team. They’ve played eight matches so far, and have one more left to go. Since June 9, the team, led by skipper Sunil Chhetri, has already won one title, beating Lebanon in the final of the Intercontinental Cup. On Tuesday, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, they look to win a second title when they face Kuwait in 2023 SAFF Championship final.

These two tournaments, while not high up in prestige or calibre, are proving important to test the mettle and dynamics of the Indian team as they steadily prepare for the upcoming challenges in the build up to the AFC Asian Cup next January.

During the press conference ahead of the Intercontinental Cup in Bhubaneshwar, Chhetri and head coach Igor Stimac were of the same opinion – a predicted nine games within the space of 30 days was a very good thing for a team that had only played eight matches in the previous 12 months.

From a national camp in Bhubaneshwar to the Intercontinental Cup in the same city and now the SAFF Championship in Bengaluru, the team has been in sync throughout this last month. For Sandesh Jhingan, one of…

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that the Indian government has urged Western countries not to give space to Khalistani elements, PTI reported.

“We have requested our partner countries like Canada, the US, the UK and Australia, where sometimes Khalistani activities happen, to not to give space to the Khalistanis,” Jaishankar said. “Because their radical, extremist thinking is neither good for us nor them nor our relations.”

The foreign minister made the remarks in response to a question about a controversial poster released by pro-Khalistani leaders in Canada.

The poster is an invitation to a rally titled “Khalistan Freedom Rally” scheduled on July 8 in Toronto, according to The Indian Express.
