HS Prannoy on Friday assured himself of a first BWF Badminton World Championships medal after beating defending champion and world No 1 Viktor Axelsen 13-21 21-15 21-16 in the men’s singles quarter-final in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The men’s doubles world No 2 pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out in the quarter-final stage, losing in straight games 18-21 19-21 to home favourites Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen.

Prannoy is now the only Indian left in the World Championships and he will become the fifth men’s singles player to win a Worlds medal after Prakash Padukone (bronze in 1983), B Sai Praneeth (bronze in 2019), Kidambi Srikanth (silver in 2021) and Lakshya Sen (bronze in 2021).

Prannoy came into the tie as the underdog not just because Axelsen was playing in front of his home crowd, but also because he was yet to drop a game in nine World Championships matches.

It was a difficult start for Prannoy with the world No 1 winning seven straight points to take a commanding 9-2 lead in the opening game. Axelsen looked fresh and Prannoy was unable to match up to his level, looking slightly sluggish and having his left shoulder heavily strapped.

मीडिया रिपोटर्स की माने तो शाह ने बताया कि कुछ पूर्ण सदस्य देशों ने पत्र लिखकर कार्यक्रम में कुछ तारीखों को बदलने का अनुरोध किया है। आईसीसी से सलाह के बाद ही तारीखों में बदलाव किया जाएगा।

Steve Smith’s 71 helped Australia recover from a batting collapse as the tourists frustrated England by battling to a first-innings lead in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Friday.

Australia were eventually bowled out for 295 on the second day, 12 runs ahead of England’s 283.

It looked as if England would enjoy a sizeable advantage as veteran seamer Stuart Broad sparked a slump that left Australia 185-7 from a comfortable 115-2 at lunch.

But Smith and Australia captain Pat Cummins (36) kept England at bay during an eighth-wicket stand of 54. Cummins then added 49 for the ninth wicket with Todd Murphy.

Off-spinner Murphy – recalled following last week’s rain-marred drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford – added to England’s woes with a sparkling 34 off just 39 balls.

Cummins eventually holed out off part-time spinner Joe Root, with rival skipper Ben Stokes throwing the ball back in over the rope at long-on to complete a fine catch.

‘Ebbed and flowed’

Australia, as the holders, are assured of retaining the Ashes at 2-1 up, and only need to avoid defeat at The Oval to secure their first Test series win away to England in 22 years.

Sankar Muthusamy and Lakshya Sen set up an all-Indian quarter-final clash after winning their respective men’s singles second-round matches at the US Open Super 300 on Thursday.

While Lakshya Sen is in great form, having won the Canada Open Super 500 last week, Muthusamy claimed the biggest win of his fledgling career after beating world No 32 Nhat Nguyen in the first round of the US Open Super 300 event.

In the second round, Sen registered a straight-games victory (21-8, 23-21) against Czech Republic’s Jan Louda. Meanwhile, Muthusamy defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman 21-18, 21-23, 21-13 in a match that lasted one hour and fourteen minutes.

India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden were knocked out from the men’s doubles event at Wimbledon on Thursday after falling to top seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Neal Skupsk of the United Kingdom in straight sets.

This was also the first time Bopanna had reached the men’s doubles semi-final since 2015.

Before losing 5-7, 4-6, the sixth seeds fought for an hour and 26 minutes. Ebden’s serve was broken at 5-5 for opponents to go 5-6. Eventually, Skupski served out the set.

As a result, the 43-year-old Bopanna missed becoming the oldest Grand Slam champion of the Open era in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.
