Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kiren Rijiju was on Thursday removed as the Union Minister of Law and Justice, a statement by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

Arjun Ram Meghwal has been assigned independent charge as the minister of state for law and justice in addition to his existing portfolios. Rijiju will take charge of the ministry of earth sciences.

It is not clear why Rijiju has been removed from the law ministry. However, the move comes days after his prolonged tussle with the judiciary.

Over the last few months, Rijiju and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar have repeatedly criticised the collegium system of appointing judges, contending that it is opaque. In the collegium system, the senior judges of the Supreme Court recommend names for the Supreme Court and High Courts and the government is expected to follow them.

Rijiju also said in December that the Centre had introduced the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act in 2014 with an objective to make appointments to the Supreme Court and High Courts “more broad-based, transparent, accountable and bringing objectivity in the system”.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to pass an interim order in favour of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Gautam Gambhir in a defamation suit filed by him against Hindi newspaper Punjab Kesari.

“You are an elected person, a public servant, you need not be so sensitive,” Justice Chandra Dhari Singh said, The Indian Express reported. “Any public person should be thick-skinned…Nowadays judges should also be thick-skinned.”

In his defamation plea, the cricketer-turned-politician sought Rs 2 crore in damages from the newspaper for publishing “false and malicious” articles about him, according to PTI. Gambhir had urged the court to direct Punjab Kesari to tender an unconditional apology and publish it in all the newspapers circulated by the group.

He had also sought removal of the allegedly defamatory articles from the newspaper’s website.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Justice Singh said that the articles highlighted by Gambhir gave an impression that the reporter of the newspaper was after him and that some of the words used for the BJP leader may not be appropriate, reported Bar and Bench.

उन्होंने कहा की मुख्यमंत्री की बात को गलत नहीं ठहराया जा सकता है। निश्चित रूप से मुख्यमंत्री के पास कोई आधार और सबूत होंगे। बता दें, धौलपुर में सीएम गहलोत ने कहा था कि कांग्रेस के कुछ विधायकों ने सरकार गिराने के लिए अमित शाह से पैसे लिए थे। मैं उनसे कहना चाहूंगा कि वो उनके पैसे लौटा दें। इस बयान के बाद ही कांग्रेस में ज्यादा उथल पुथल मची हुई है।

उन्होंने अपनी ही सरकार को भ्रष्टाचार के रिकॉर्ड तोड़ने वाली सरकार बताया। गुढ़ा ने पायलट के साथ जनसभा को संबोधित करते हुए कहा, ये वसुंधरा राजे और अशोक गहलोत की मिली जुली सरकार है। हमारी सरकार का अलाइनमेंट खराब हो गया है। मंत्री धारीवाल के लिए भी उन्होंने कुछ ऐसी भाषा को प्रयोग किया जो कम ही सुनने को मिलती है।

मंत्री राजेंद्र गुढ़ा ने अपनी सरकार के मंत्री शांति धारीवाल पर भ्रष्टाचार के आरोप लगाए। मंत्री राजेंद्र गुढ़ा ने कहा, मुख्यमंत्री जी आपके और वसुंधरा जी के साथ-साथ ही कोरोना होता है, मुख्यमंत्री को कोरोना होता है, उसी टाइम पर वसुंधरा जी को भी कोरोना होता है। ये मिली जुली सरकार है।
