Urmila Pachkar spends roughly 12 hours each week strapped to a dialysis machine. She travels three times a week for dialysis to a centre 12 km from her home. She will turn 31 in August, but her sallow cheeks and bony form give her the appearance of a teenager.
In 2013, Pachkar was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, a condition in which the organs, each the size of a coffee mug, are no longer able to filter blood, remove waste from the body, and maintain fluid balance.
Her life now depends on someone else’s death: today, Pachkar is one of 3,375 individuals in Mumbai who are waiting for a new kidney. “It has been seven years now,” Pachkar says, referring to the time since she registered herself for a transplant.
Under Indian law, an individual can receive a kidney, or part of a liver, from a living family member or friend. They can also receive these organs from a deceased donor, called a cadaver donor. (Certain organs, such as the heart, lungs, bowel, intestine, or hands, can only be transplanted from cadaver donors.)

Deepanshi Jain, a young woman in her early 20s, has a YouTube channel that has amassed over 100,000 subscribers. It started with the Covid-19 lockdown, when she found herself wondering what to do with the time that hung heavy on her hands.
Figuring that there could be others battling the same dilemma, Jain started a YouTube channel with a simple theme: What do you do – what can you do – when you are stuck at home?
The content gained immediate traction. “My channel was monetised within two months,” Jain says. “My videos went viral during Covid. Within two months, I got 6,000 subscribers.” She quit her job and devoted all her time to content creation.
Jain exemplifies a study, published in 2022, by Oxford Economics which found that the ever-growing numbers of creative entrepreneurs on YouTube contributed over Rs 10,000 crore to India’s Gross Domestic Product in 2021. The study, fielded in eight Indian languages, also found that the platform supported an equivalent of 750,000 full-time jobs.
The study shows that unlike the much-talked-about internet-based startups that originate in the metros and big cities, content creators are emerging from every nook and corner of the country.
The right of an individual to choose their sex or gender identity is integral to their personality and is one of the most basic aspects of self-determination, dignity and freedom, the Rajasthan High Court has observed, reported Bar and Bench on Monday.
Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand made the observation in his judgement ordering authorities to consider changing service records of a petitioner who had been assigned the female gender at birth. The order was passed on May 25.
The petitioner had got a job in 2013 under the General Female Category but was diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder – the incongruence between a person’s experienced or expressed gender and the one they were assigned at birth.
After this, the petitioner underwent a gender reassignment surgery to become a male. He then married a woman and fathered two children.
In his plea, the petitioner had argued that that unless his name and gender is changed in his service records, it would be difficult for him and his family to get the benefits of his service. He had sought that the authorities should make the needed changes in the records.
The petitioner had also legally changed his name and gender to reflect their male identity, reported the Hindustan Times.

The boycott by 19 Opposition parties of the inauguration of the new parliament building on Sunday has grabbed media attention. The Opposition’s contention is that the Indian president, as the constitutional head of the country, should inaugurate the new building – not the prime minister. The government has countered this by pointing to instances where additions to the parliament building such as the annexe were inaugurated by Indira Gandhi when she was prime minister.
However, this debate is somewhat pointless. It would be foolhardy to expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose pet project is the new parliament, to let go the opportunity to bask in the limelight and extract maximum mileage from the event.

जयपुर। ज्यादा समय पुरानी बात नही है। यही की दस बारह साल पहले की यह कहानी है। कच्ची बस्ती से लेकर पॉश कॉलोनी…राशन की दुकानें कही ना कहीं दिखाई दे जाती थी। किसी को गेहूं चाहिए था तो किसी को चीनी या फिर दाल औरचाय की पत्ती जैसे जरूरी आइटम गरीबों तक सस्ती दरों पर मिल जाय ,इसके लिए राशन की दुकानों ने अच्छा काम किया था।
इसी का परिणाम था कि इस सुविधा को लेकर लोगों में विश्वास लोटने लगा था। मगर तभी प्रशासन ने एक नई व्यवस्था को आम जानो के कन्धों पर थोप दिया। उनका मकसद साफ था। इन गरीबों के हक की रोटी को मुसीबतों के जाल में फंसा दिया जाए। इसी कड़ी में सरकार के निर्देश थे की बोमेट्रिक मशीन में उस की उंगली का निशान जब तक नहीं लगेगा तब तक उसे राशन के आइटम नही मिलेंगे।
देखा जाय तो योजना बुरी भी नही थी।मगर हर बात के दो पहलू हुआ करते है।लोगों ने योजना का विरोध शुरू कर दिया।बापूनगर जैसी पौष कॉलोनी की राशन की दुकान एका एक लुप्त हो गई है। दुकान कहां गई। इसके संचालक कहां भूमि गत हो गए।गणेश नगर कॉलोनी में रह रही श्रमिक महिला के पास इसका जवाब है। वह बताती थी, उन दिनों राशन की इन दुकानों पर बासमति चावल की किनकी जो बहुत सस्ती और हाई क्वालिटी थी,उसका वितरण किया जा रहा था।
इसी चक्कर में कुछ लोगों ने राशन की इस दुकान को ही हाई जेक कर लिया। बापूनगर के निवासी भटकते रहे,आज तक भी इस दुकान अता पता नहीं हैं।चाय चीनी के अलावा चावल और तूर की दाल की कहानी दिलचस्प है। शुरू में इसका स्वाद लोगों को पसंद आया। लंबी लाइन को परेशानी को भोग कर भी इन आय टमो को खरीदने लगे। राशन की दुकानों के अनेक संचालक बईमानी पर उतर आए।
जनता का राशन लोगों तक पहुंचने की अपेक्षा अनाज मंडी में लेजाकर मंहगी दरो पर बिकने लगा। आम जनता जब भी इन दुकानों पर जाया करती थी,तब या तो इन दुकानों पर मोटा ताला लटका मिलता था अथवा स्टाक में नहीं होने का फरमान सुनाया जाता था।पार्षद, पोस्ट वार्डन से जवाब मांगा गया, मगर वे भी हैरान थे। झालाना basty की महिला ने बताया की उनकी बस्ती की एक अधेड़ महिला ने बताया की उसे हाई ब्लड प्रेशर रहता है।इस पर चलने फिरने में दिक्कत होती है।
सरकार की नई व्यवस्था में इन दुखियारों को राहत देने जैसी कोई सुविधा ना होने पर वे दुखी रहने लगे। हमने कौशिश की ओर अपनी मजबूरी बताई मगर कोई रहम नहीं बख्शा गया। परिवार के मुखिया के प्रतिनिधि को भी सरकारी राशन नहीं दिया। किया,मगर अम्मीजान को राशन की दुकान तक जाकर अपनी मैया का पिछले चार माह से सकीना के परिवार को राशन का अनाज नहीं मिला है।
यह बात केवल सकीना अकेली इस समस्या की शिकार नही हुई है। बहुत से लोग इस पीड़ा को झेल रहे हैं।बापू नगर के लोकल नेता कहते है कि राशन कार्ड परिवार के मुखिया के नाम पर ही बनता है। इन में अनेक लोग अवस्था अधिक होने पर चल फिर नही सकते। उनकी उंगली के चमड़ी खराब हो जाने पर बायोमेट्रिक मशीन फिंगर प्रिंट मैच नहीं कर पा रही है। बिना मैचिंग के पीड़ित परिवार को राशन का सामान नहीं मिल रहा है।

Though the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) has refocused attention on school education in recent years, some fundamental problems continue to plague the system. Despite the constitutional and legal obligations of governments, education budgets have remained modest and woefully inadequate to requirements. While there has been a reasonable expansion of coverage and enrolment in schools, the fundamental issue of poor learning outcomes, especially in government schools, has not been addressed. नंगेली का नाम केरल के बाहर शायद किसी ने न सुना हो. किसी स्कूल के इतिहास की किताब में उनका ज़िक्र या कोई तस्वीर भी नहीं मिलेगी.
लेकिन उनके साहस की मिसाल ऐसी है कि एक बार जानने पर कभी नहीं भूलेंगे, क्योंकि नंगेली ने स्तन ढकने के अधिकार के लिए अपने ही स्तन काट दिए थे.
केरल के इतिहास के पन्नों में छिपी ये लगभग सौ से डेढ़ सौ साल पुरानी कहानी उस समय की है जब केरल के बड़े भाग में त्रावणकोर के राजा का शासन था.
जातिवाद की जड़ें बहुत गहरी थीं और निचली जातियों की महिलाओं को उनके स्तन न ढकने का आदेश था. उल्लंघन करने पर उन्हें ‘ब्रेस्ट टैक्स’ यानी ‘स्तन कर’ देना पड़ता था.
डॉ.शीबा
केरल के श्री शंकराचार्य संस्कृत विश्वविद्यालय में जेंडर इकॉलॉजी और दलित स्टडीज़ की एसोसिएट प्रोफ़ेसर डॉ. शीबा केएम बताती हैं कि ये वो समय था जब पहनावे के कायदे ऐसे थे कि एक व्यक्ति को देखते ही उसकी जाति की पहचान की जा सकती थी.
डॉ. शीबा कहती हैं, “ब्रेस्ट टैक्स का मक़सद जातिवाद के ढांचे को बनाए रखना था. ये एक तरह से एक औरत के निचली जाति से होने की कीमत थी. इस कर को बार-बार अदा कर पाना इन ग़रीब समुदायों के लिए मुमकिन नहीं था.”
केरल के हिंदुओं में जाति के ढांचे में नायर जाति को शूद्र माना जाता था जिनसे निचले स्तर पर एड़वा और फिर दलित समुदायों को रखा जाता था.
दलित समुदाय
उस दौर में दलित समुदाय के लोग ज़्यादातर खेतिहर मज़दूर थे और ये कर देना उनके बस के बाहर था. ऐसे में एड़वा और नायर समुदाय की औरतें ही इस कर को देने की थोड़ी क्षमता रखती थीं.
डॉ. शीबा के मुताबिक इसके पीछे सोच थी कि अपने से ऊंची जाति के आदमी के सामने औरतों को अपने स्तन नहीं ढकने चाहिए.
वो बताती हैं, “ऊंची जाति की औरतों को भी मंदिर में अपने सीने का कपड़ा हटा देना होता था, पर निचली जाति की औरतों के सामने सभी मर्द ऊंची जाति के ही थे. तो उनके पास स्तन ना ढकने के अलावा कोई विकल्प नहीं था.”
इसी बीच एड़वा जाति की एक महिला, नंगेली ने इस कर को दिए बग़ैर अपने स्तन ढकने का फ़ैसला कर लिया.
केरल के चेरथला में अब भी इलाके के बुज़ुर्ग उस जगह का पता बता देते हैं जहां नंगेली रहती थीं.
मोहनन नारायण
ऑटो चलाने वाले मोहनन नारायण हमें वो जगह दिखाने साथ चल पड़े. उन्होंने बताया, “कर मांगने आए अधिकारी ने जब नंगेली की बात को नहीं माना तो नंगेली ने अपने स्तन ख़ुद काटकर उसके सामने रख दिए.”
लेकिन इस साहस के बाद ख़ून ज़्यादा बहने से नंगेली की मौत हो गई. बताया जाता है कि नंगेली के दाह संस्कार के दौरान उनके पति ने भी अग्नि में कूदकर अपनी जान दे दी.
नंगेली का जन्म स्थान
नंगेली की याद में उस जगह का नाम मुलच्छीपुरम यानी ‘स्तन का स्थान’ रख दिया गया. पर समय के साथ अब वहां से नंगेली का परिवार चला गया है और साथ ही इलाके का नाम भी बदलकर मनोरमा जंक्शन पड़ गया है.
बहुत कोशिश के बाद वहां से कुछ किलोमीटर की दूरी पर रह रहे नंगेली के पड़पोते मणियन वेलू का पता मिला.
मणियन
साइकिल किनारे लगाकर मणियन ने बताया कि नंगेली के परिवार की संतान होने पर उन्हें बहुत गर्व है.
उनका कहना था, “उन्होंने अपने लिए नहीं बल्कि सारी औरतों के लिए ये कदम उठाया था जिसका नतीजा ये हुआ कि राजा को ये कर वापस लेना पड़ा.”
लेकिन इतिहासकार डॉ. शीबा ये भी कहती हैं कि इतिहास की किताबों में नंगेली के बारे में इतनी कम पड़ताल की गई है कि उनके विरोध और कर वापसी में सीधा रिश्ता कायम करना बहुत मुश्किल है.
वो कहती हैं, “इतिहास हमेशा पुरुषों की नज़र से लिखा गया है, पिछले दशकों में कुछ कोशिशें शुरू हुई हैं महिलाओं के बारे में जानकारी जुटाने की, शायद उनमें कभी नंगेली की बारी भी आ जाए और हमें उनके साहसी कदम के बारे में विस्तार से और कुछ पता चल पाए.”

Dancers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in Los Angeles have voted to become the only unionised strippers in the US – joining a growing trend of young employees seeking workplace protection though labour mobilisation.
On May 18, 2023, the National Labor Relations Board announced that balloted employees at the topless bar had voted 17-0 in favor of joining the Actors’ Equity Association.
It makes Star Garden the first unionised strip club since the now-defunct Lusty Lady in San Francisco and Seattle. That 1996 union campaign was later the subject of the documentary “Live Nude Girls Unite”.
Lusty Lady shut its doors in Seattle in 2010, and three years later in San Francisco, making Star Garden if not the first then at present the only unionised strip club. But given the high-profile nature of the campaign – and the impact of union drives among young staff elsewhere – I believe that there is a high chance that Star Garden won’t be the last strip joint to unionise.
Rusty nails, broken glass
Star Garden is the latest in a string of organising breakthroughs. In 2022, 2,510 petitions for union representation were filed with National Labor Relations Board elections – a 53% increase from 2021 and the highest number since 2016. Petitions for union elections have continued to increase in 2023.
Sunday was always going to be blockbuster. It was the final day of the league stage of the IPL 2023, after all. The fourth spot in the points table was up for grabs and both Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore (and Rajasthan Royals) had a stake. And, it was a day for centuries.
Three tons were scored for the first time ever in this league.
First, Cameron Green did it for Mumbai Indians. Then, Virat Kohli put on a single-handed master-class to score his seventh IPL century for Royal Challengers Bangalore. And finally, Shubman Gill’s century proved to be the cherry on the cake and the knockout punch from Gujarat Titans to knock RCB out.
Only last week, Kohli was passing on the baton to Gill saying, “Go on and lead the next generation,” and on the rain-affected evening at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru both Kohli and Gill ended up scoring back-to-back centuries. It was both poetic and ironic.
Our food systems are under enormous strain. As the climate crisis deepens – as highlighted by the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – extreme weather events are growing in frequency and severity, with droughts, floods and storms devastating crops, disrupting water supplies and taking a high toll on agricultural production. These stresses have also been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and international conflicts, such as the invasion of Ukraine.
In a vicious cycle, current food systems – which rely heavily on industrial agriculture and fossil fuel extraction – are contributing to many of the very crises that make them vulnerable. Today, food systems are responsible for almost one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions.
Agriculture alone uses 70% of the world’s freshwater and is the single greatest driver of habitat and biodiversity loss. The plummeting diversity of pollinators and natural pest control species, as well as worsening soil health, threatens the ecological foundations of farming.
Food systems are also failing workers. One in four people globally earn their living from farming in one way or the other. And yet for many, their livelihoods are defined by low pay, poor job security, no social protection and often dangerous working conditions….
I have had a long-standing interest in South Africa, and in 1995 briefly contemplated moving there to work. The country had just had its first multiracial election, and the great Nelson Mandela had been elected president. अगर आप हर महीने 9000 रुपये निवेश करते हैं तो आपके लिए यह 300 रुपये प्रतिदिन है। पीपीएफ कैलकुलेटर से पता चलता है कि पीपीएफ खाते में 9000 रुपये का मासिक निवेश मौजूदा 7.1% ब्याज दर पर 15 साल में बढ़कर 29.2 लाख रुपये हो सकता है।
7.1% ब्याज दर पर 20 वर्षों में 9000 रुपये प्रति माह के निवेश से कुल परिपक्वता राशि 47.9 करोड़ रुपये हो जाती है और 25 वर्षों के लिए निवेश पर यह राशि 74.2 करोड़ रुपये हो जाती है। वहीं, अगर आप 30 साल तक हर महीने 9000 रुपये का निवेश जारी रखते हैं तो मैच्योरिटी राशि 1.11 करोड़ रुपये हो सकती है।
इसी तरह, 9,000 रुपये प्रति माह के योगदान वाले पीपीएफ खाते में, 7.1% की ब्याज दर के साथ, परिपक्वता राशि 35 वर्षों में 1.63 करोड़ रुपये और 40 वर्षों में 2.36 करोड़ रुपये हो जाती है। इसका मतलब यह है कि अगर कोई निवेशक 20 साल की उम्र से पीपीएफ योजना में निवेश करना शुरू करता है तो 60 साल की उम्र में सेवानिवृत्ति के समय उसके खाते में 2.36 करोड़ रुपये होंगे।

इसके बाद से ही टीना डाबी की आलोचना हो रही है। उनके आदेश के बाद जैसलमेर में घरों को ढहा दिया गया है। खबरों की माने तो बच्चों समेत 150 से ज्यादा लोग बेघर हो गए हैं। अब वे सब खुले आसमान के नीचे तपती धूप में रहने को मजबूर हैं। इससे पहले जोधपुर में भी विस्थापितों के आशियाने पर बुलडोजर चला था।
जानकारी के अनुसार जैसलमेर के नगर विकास न्यास ने अमर सागर पंचायत की जमीन से अतिक्रमण हटाने की कार्रवाई की है। इस मामले में प्रशासन का कहना है कि ये विस्थापित परिवार अमर सागर तालाब के किनारे अवैध मकान बनाकर रह रहे हैं। इस कारण तालाब के पानी की आवक रुक गई। साथ ही यह भूमि काफी कीमती भी बताई जा रही है।
Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) has started accepting online applications from eligible candidates for recruitment to the post of Homeopathic Medical Officer. Interested candidates can apply for the vacancies on the official website opsc.gov.in till June 16.
The OPSC recruitment drive aims to fill up a total of 105 HMO posts.
Eligibility Criteria
Age Limit: 21 years to 38 years as on January 1, 2023.
Educational Qualification: A candidate must have possessed the degree of bachelor’s in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) or equivalent degree from a recognised University or Institution recognised by Central Council of Homeopathy and must have recognised himself/ herself under the Odisha State Board of Homeopathic Medicines.
Examination Fee
There is no application fee.
Selection Process
The applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of written examination to be held at Cuttack/ Bhubaneshwar. More details in the notification.

In February, the death by suicide of Darshan Solanki, a Dalit student of IIT Bombay, reignited a debate about the treatment of students from marginalised communities in India’s educational institutions. In Solanki’s case, details are continuing to emerge about what led to his death. But the problem is a larger one – in December 2021, the education minister stated in parliament that 122 students in Central government higher educational institutions had died by suicide between 2014 and 2021, and that 68 of these students were from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Class communities.
