Rahul Soni, associate publisher at HarperCollins India, is also an accomplished translator. His translation of Shrikant Verma’s renowned book of poetry, Magadh, was originally published in 2013. In May this year, the translation was revised and the second version was published by Eka, an imprint of Westland Books. In the same month, Penguin reissued Rahul Soni’s translation of Geetanjali Shree’s The Room Beneath Their Feet, ten years after it was first published.

A long-time translator and editor, Soni spoke to Scroll about revisiting Magadh after a decade, his translating philosophy, editing translations, and what makes him take on a translation project. Excerpts from the interview:

The Manipur High Court has ordered the state government to partially lift the ban on internet that has been in place since May 3 when violence broke out, The Hindu reported on Saturday.

A division bench of Justices Ahanthem Bimol Singh and A Guneshwar Sharma was hearing a petition seeking restoration of services. The court directed the Home Department to provide internet through Internet Lease Lines across the state and consider Fibre to Home connections on a case-to-case basis, The Hindu reported.

Leased lines provide dedicated internet connection as opposed to broadband connections which use a shared line model for users. Fibre to Home connections use the same technology as broadband, but provide a faster internet connection.

Following recommendations from an expert committee, the Manipur High Court has ordered that the speed for restored internet connections will be limited to 10 megabytes per second. Users will have to give undertakings that they will not do anything illegal and will allow “physical monitoring by the concerned authority/officials”.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3. Widespread incidents of violence and arson continue to deepen the crisis in the state. Over 140 people have been killed and nearly 60,000 have been forced to flee their homes.

Many women will, at least temporarily, be the breadwinner at some point in their relationship. Changing employment trends and gender roles will affect many households. But our new peer-reviewed study shows that for heterosexual couples, wellbeing is lower when the woman is the sole earner, versus if the man is the breadwinner or if both partners are employed.

Over 14 years of European social survey data, men and women reported lower life satisfaction when the female wife or partner was the breadwinner, with men suffering the most. This is true even after controlling for income, attitudes toward gender and other characteristics.

We analysed the survey responses of over 42,000 working-age people spanning nine countries. The data measures wellbeing by asking people to score how satisfied they are with their lives as a whole nowadays, from zero (extremely dissatisfied) to ten (extremely satisfied). Most people give a score between five and eight.

These “life satisfaction points” give us a sense of how different groups’ wellbeing compares. Before any controls, men’s life satisfaction is 5.86 when the woman is the sole earner, versus 7.16 when the man is the only earner. For women, the corresponding figures are 6.33 and 7.10 respectively.

The Swimming Federation of India, on Saturday, officially announced a strong 23-member contingent in the aquatic disciplines (swimming & diving) which includes 12 male swimmers and two divers. The federation selection committee met after the completion of the Senior National Aquatic Championships, which was also a qualification meet for the Asian Games, in Hyderabad.
