No mafias or rogue doctors – the organ trade is a more sophisticated operation

Every now and then the trade in human organs makes national, even international, news.

In March 2023, a Nigerian politician, his wife and a medical middleman were found guilty of an organ-trafficking plot after they brought a man to the UK from Lagos to sell his kidney. Several months later in Kenya, following the arrest of a televangelist on charges of a mass killing of his followers, autopsies on the corpses revealed missing organs, raising suspicions of forced organ harvesting. In 2020, researcher Sean Columb exposed how numerous African migrants sold their kidneys in Cairo, Egypt, in hopes of using the earnings to pay smugglers to take them across the Mediterranean into Europe.

These reports and cases are part of a global proliferation of the organ trade that started in the late 1980s. It coincided with advancements in transplantation. Until the 1980s, transplantation was regarded as a risky and experimental procedure. Since the introduction of immunosuppressive drugs in the 1980s (which help to prevent the body from rejecting organs), it has become standardised practice. Organ transplants are now conducted in hospitals in more than 90 countries.

Delhi liquor policy case: ED attaches assets worth Rs 52.2 crore of Manish Sisodia and others

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday attached assets worth Rs 52.24 crore belonging to Manish Sisodia and others in connection with alleged irregularities in the national capital’s now-scrapped liquor policy.

The central agency said that assets worth Rs. 128.78 crore have been attached in the case so far.

ED has provisionally attached movable and immovable assets worth Rs. 52.24 Crore belonging to Manish Sisodia, Amandeep Singh Dhall, Rajesh Joshi, Gautam Malhotra and others in the case of Delhi Liquor Scam. Total attachment in the case is now Rs. 128.78 Crore.

The former Delhi deputy chief minister was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on February 26 and is in judicial custody. The Enforcement Directorate is investigating the money-laundering aspect of the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate have alleged that the excise policy was modified to ensure a 12% profit margin for wholesalers and a nearly 185% profit margin for retailers.

The Enforcement Directorate also claims that members of a so-called “South Group” had paid at least Rs 100 crore in kickbacks to leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party through businessman Vijay Nair.

Odisha train accident: CBI arrests three railway officials

The Central Bureau of Investigation Friday arrested three persons in connection with the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore that claimed at least 293 lives, PTI reported.

Those arrested have been identified as senior section engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, section engineer Mohammad Amir Khan and technician Pappu Kumar.

The investigating agency said that the accused have been arrested under Sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code for “their action which led to the incident”, the Hindustan Times reported. The agency, however, did not state what these actions were.

On June 2, one of India’s deadliest rail crashes occurred in Balasore when two coaches of the Yesvantpur-Howrah Express derailed near the Bahanaga Road railway station. The derailed coaches came in the path of the speeding Coromandel Express on the adjoining track and collided with it. A goods train was also hit in the process. More than 900 people were injured.

In his report submitted to the Railway Board last week, Commissioner of Railway Safety AM Chowdhary had said that the train accident occurred due to faulty signalling and botched repair works.

The first repair work was carried out in 2018, while the second was done just hours before the accident took place.

विधि

आपको आलू और मूंगफली की सब्जी बनाने के लिए आलू और मूंगफली को भून लेना है। इसके बाद आपको एक पैन में तेल डालकर गर्म करना है और इसमें जीरा, सरसों, हरी मिर्च और कढ़ी पत्ता डालकर चटकाना है। अब इसमें मूंगफली और आलू को डाल दे और पकने दे। कुछ समय के बाद गरम मसाला, नमक, हल्दी, धनिया पाउडर डाले और अग 5 मिनट के लिए पकाए। बाद में इसमें टमाटर डाले ओर सर्व करें।

UPSSSC Auditor, Asst Accountant notification 2023 released; 530 posts on offer

Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) has released the recruitment notification for the posts of Auditor and Assistant Accountant. Eligible candidates will be able to apply for the vacancies on the official website upsssc.gov.in from July 11 onwards. The last date to apply for the post is August 1.

Candidates will be able to make changes to their application forms till August 8.

The recruitment drive aims to fill up a total of 530 posts, of which 529 vacancies are for the post of Auditor and 1 for Assistant Accountant.

ICC Men’s ODI World Cup: Netherlands defeat Scotland by four wickets to qualify for marquee event

A stunning maiden ODI century from Bas de Leede fired Netherlands to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a dramatic four-wicket victory over Scotland.

Victory had looked unlikely at various points throughout the match for the Dutch, who knew they had to chase their target of 278 in just 44 overs owing to Scotland’s superior net run-rate.

But De Leede was a man inspired in Bulawayo, combining with Saqib Zulfiqar to crunch 40 runs off just 11 balls late on before Logan van Beek hit the winning run to clinch qualification.

Bas de Leede produced a dazzling first-ever ODI ton to fire Netherlands to the World Cup with a dramatic four-wicket victory over Scotland.

De Leede starred with bat and ball, picking up a first ODI five-for before smashing 123 with the bat to haul the Netherlands home and punch their tickets to India later this year.

Having put Scotland into bat, Netherlands made the perfect start as Logan van Beek (1/49) struck in the first over to dismiss Matthew Cross (0).

‘Blind’ review: Latest remake of Korean thriller is slick but unfeeling

Pity those who have watched the Korean thriller Blind (2011) or its Tamil remake Netrikann, which came out on Disney+ Hotstar in 2021. For them, the impact of the Hindi version, also called Blind and premiered on JioCinema, is undermined by sheer familiarity.

Those who haven’t seen the original movie are in for a slick but unfeeling reworking, a weak heroine, a glowering villain, a charming secondary character, and an adorable guide dog. The setting is Glasgow, where police officer Gia (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja) loses her sight in an accident. Discouraged from re-joining work, Gia gets the chance to prove her sleuthing skills when she runs into a serial killer.

Introduced early in the film, the murderer known only as The Driver (Purab Kohli) torments Gia when not dispatching his victims in gruesome ways. Police investigator Prithvi (Vinay Pathak) takes Gia’s help in tracking down the antagonist. Their efforts are boosted by Nikhil (Shubham Saraf). Gia’s four-legged friend Elsa does her bit too.

The largely faithful remake is filmed clinically, perhaps too much so. While better-looking than the Tamil production, Blind is unable to drum up the emotional heft needed in portraying the crucial relationships that develop between Gia and Prithvi and Gia and Nikhil.

Why climate change is making it harder to forecast the monsoon accurately

In April, the India Meteorological Department made two important forecasts for the upcoming monsoon. One, that El Niño conditions – the unusual warming of ocean surface water that can cause reduced rainfall – were likely to develop during the monsoon. Two, despite these conditions, the monsoon will be “normal”, with the south peninsula expecting normal to above normal amounts of rain, and north-west India expecting normal or below normal rainfall.

However, by the end of June, the situation on the ground looked very different from these forecasts. The geographical distribution of rainfall was the opposite of what had been forecast: north-west India saw 42% excess rainfall in June, while the southern peninsula experienced 45% below normal rainfall, along with a 6% deficiency in central India, and an 18% deficiency in east and north-east India.

The April forecast of the IMD followed the template of long-range forecasting, which can be done as many as two years in advance. For the monsoon – a crucial season during which India gets 70% of its annual rainfall – the IMD issues forecasts up to three months in advance. Predicting rainfall between June to September, it presents a general trend of expected monsoonal conditions.

Weightlifting: India to host Commonwealth and AWF Asian Junior and Youth Championships in July

The Indian Weightlifting Federation on Thursday announced that the country will be hosting the 2023 Commonwealth Senior, Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championship as well as the 2023 AWF Asian Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championship in July. Both tournaments will be held at the Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The Commonwealth Championship, from July 12-16, will feature 253 athletes from 20 countries while the Asian Junior & Youth Championship, from July 28-August 5, will have 325 participating athletes from 33 countries.

The Indian squad for the Commonwealth Championship, 52 athletes in total, will feature 19 senior lifters like Shubham Todkar, competing in the 61kg category and Ajith Narayana, who made his international debut in the 73kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in South Korea earlier this year. Nineteen athletes will compete in the junior events and 20 lifters will compete in the youth events.

Forty lifters in total will represent India at the Asian Junior and Youth Championships, being hosted for the first time in the country, with athletes being split equally across the junior and youth events.

Nepal PM stirs row saying Indian businessman offered to get him the post

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda stirred a controversy saying that an Indian businessman had offered to help him get the country’s top post, PTI reported on Thursday.

Prachanda made the remarks on Monday at a launch event of the book Roads to the Valley: The Legacy of Sardar Pritam Singh in Nepal. He said that Singh, a Nepal-based trucking sector entrepreneur, had played an important role in enhancing relations between Kathmandu and Delhi.

“He had once made efforts to make me the prime minister,” Prachanda had said, according to PTI. “He travelled to Delhi several times and held multiple rounds of talks with political leaders in Kathmandu to make me the prime minister.”

Opposition parties have criticised the remarks saying that they showed political interference from India.

The main Opposition party Communist Party of Nepal-(Unified Marxist-Leninist) disrupted proceedings in the Upper House of the Nepali Parliament on Wednesday, demanding the prime minister’s resignation. KP Sharma Oli, the party’s chairperson, told reporters that they wanted Prachanda’s resignation, and not a clarification.

“His remarks have given a blow to national independence, dignity, the Constitution and the Parliament itself,” Oli added.

‘Adhura’ review: An engaging show about past and present secrets

When it comes to horror shows on streaming platforms, restraint is not a word that would normally apply. But the Prime Video series Adhura, written and directed by Ananya Banerjee and Gauravv K Chawla, manages to keep the schlock scares under control for most of the seven episodes.

While the plot recycles the I Know What You Did Last Summer formula, foggy hill stations, Gothic buildings, old boy reunions and murder make for a watchable cocktail. Nilgiri Valley, an elite boarding school for boys in Ooty, is the setting for the drama. The timeline moves from 2007 to the present, when that batch from the past is congregating for a 15-year reunion.

Adhiraj (Ishwak Singh), an anxiety-prone professor, is travelling from America, hoping to mend fences with his old friend Ninad (Poojan Chhabra). His former sweetheart Malvika (Zoa Morani) is now married to Dev (Rijul Ray), a former classmate and arrogant son of the school trustee.
