The landmark American movie 12 Angry Men, released in 1957, holds an important lesson for contemporary India.
It is an intense courtroom drama in which the fate of a young man charged with murdering his father depends on the verdict of a 12-member jury. As per the judge’s instructions, if there was any reasonable doubt that the accused may not have committed the crime, the jury must pronounce him not guilty.
There is an air of a foregone conclusion having been reached. At the beginning of the film, 11 of the 12 jury members vote the accused to be guilty. But one juror holds out.
On a sweltering afternoon in a claustrophobic room, juror number eight spiritedly argues for the constitutional rights of the accused, premised on the principles of natural justice that a person is presumed to be innocent unless there is evidence of guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
By the end of the film, this juror has made his case convincingly to the others. The defendant is acquitted.
The film is a remarkable interrogation of prejudices leading to foregone conclusions and incorrect decisions. It is also a celebration of constructive deliberation being the touchstone of democracy and justice that can prevent deaths borne of haste and hubris.

Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday said in an opinion piece in the Indian Express that their now one-month long protest will continue until Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is arrested.

An inmate at Delhi’s Tihar jail died by suicide on Monday hours after he was convicted by a court in a robbery case, reported the Hindustan Times.
The man, 26-year-old Jawed, was found hanging in a bathroom in the jail.
“As per the security officials, Jawed hanged himself from a tap in the bathroom with the help of a cloth at 5 pm at the common toilet area of the enclosure for mulahiza inmates [first-time offenders],” Director General (Prisons), Sanjay Baniwal told the newspaper.
Earlier in the day, Jawed was convicted by an additional sessions judge in a 2016 robbery case registered at Delhi’s Malviya Nagar police station.
“He was reportedly crying after coming from the court,” an unidentified jail official told the Hindustan Times. “Later in the evening, he went to the bathroom, where he hanged himself with a very thick cord, made by twisting together several thinner clothes. Nobody could notice it as toilets and bathrooms are not covered under CCTV surveillance in Tihar.”
A judicial inquiry has been initiated into the incident, reported the Hindustan Times.

Three journalists covering the violence in Manipur’s East Imphal district were allegedly assaulted by security personnel on Monday, reported the Imphal Free Press.
The journalists – Soram Inaoba and Nongthombam Johnson from the channel Mami TV and Brahmacharimayum Dayananda from the news agency ANI – were allegedly assaulted with batons by security personnel while they were recording footage of a burning building from a construction site at the New Checkon area of Imphal.
They were allegedly assaulted after security personnel accused mediapersons of throwing stones at a drone that was being operated by the authorities. The journalists, however, denied the claim.
On Monday, fresh violence was reported in Manipur after a mob had torched homes in the New Checkon market of Imphal West district.
Tensions in the northeastern state were first reported on May 3 after thousands participated in a protest march organised by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur to oppose the demand of the majority Meitei community to be included in the Scheduled Tribe category.

रुद्रप्रयाग (उत्तराखंड)। बॉलीवुड अभिनेता अक्षय कुमार ने मंगलवार को केदारनाथ मंदिर में दर्शन पूजन किया।
श्री बदरीनाथ केदारनाथ मंदिर समिति के मुख्य कार्याधिकारी योगेंद्र सिंह ने बताया कि कुमार अपने पारिवारिक मित्र सुमित अदालका के साथ हेलीकॉप्टर से सुबह केदारनाथ पहुंचे और उन्होंने एक आम श्रद्धालु की तरह भगवान केदारनाथ के दर्शन किए।
फिल्म अभिनेता हैलीपेड से बिना जूते पहने नंगे पांव चलकर मंदिर तक पहुंचे जहां उन्होंने भोले बाबा के दर्शन के किए और पूजा में सम्मिलित हुए। इस अवसर पर मंदिर समिति की ओर से सिंह ने उन्हें बाबा केदारनाथ का प्रसाद, भस्म तथा रूद्राक्ष माला भेंट की।दर्शन के बाद अभिनेता ने कहा कि केदारनाथ धाम में भगवान शिव के दर्शन करके वह बहुत अभिभूत हैं।
उन्होंने मंदिर परिसर में मौजूद तीर्थयात्रियों का अभिवादन भी किया।उत्तराखंड के गढ़वाल हिमालय में 11750 फुट की उंचाई पर स्थित केदारनाथ धाम की यात्रा में इन दिनों बड़ी संख्या में श्रद्धालु उमड़ रहे हैं। पच्चीस अप्रैल को मंदिर के कपाट खुलने के बाद से शुक्रवार तक चार लाख 52 हजार 84 श्रद्धालु भगवान केदार के दर्शन कर चुके हैं।
शिमला। हिमाचल प्रदेश के कुल्लू और शिमला जिलों में दो अलग-अलग सड़क हादसों में पांच लोगों की मौत हो गयी और दो अन्य लोग घायल हो गये। पुलिस ने मंगलवार को यह जानकारी दी।
पुलिस के मुताबिक शिमला जिले के रोहड़ू उपमंडल में एक वाहन के पब्बर नदी में गिर जाने से उसमें सवार तीन लोगों की मौत हो गई और दो अन्य घायल हो गए।
पुलिस ने बताया कि सोमवार रात यह हादसा उस समय हुआ, जब वाहन में सवार पांच लोग एक शादी समारोह में शामिल होने के लिए रामपुर से चिड़गांव के जांगला की ओर जा रहे थे।
पुलिस के मुताबिक मृतकों की पहचान रामपुर निवासी श्रेय नेगी ((18), शिवांग (18) और जतिर (20) के तौर पर हुई है। वहीं, घायल करुण चौहान और रमण को रोहड़ू के सरकारी अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया है।पुलिस के अनुसार हादसे के कारणों का अभी पता नहीं चल पाया है। हालांकि, प्रारंभिक जांच में चालक के वाहन पर से नियंत्रण खो देने की बात सामने आई है।
एक अन्य दुर्घटना में कुल्लू जिले के निरमंड क्षेत्र में दमहेली के निकट मंगलवार को एक वाहन के 150 मीटर गहरी खाई में गिर जाने से वाहन चालक सहित दो लोगों की मौके पर ही मौत हो गयी।पुलिस ने बताया कि मृतकों की पहचान निरमंड निवासी लहेर सिंह (45) और कामू (26) के रूप में हुई है।

चेन्नई। तमिलनाडु के मुख्यमंत्री एम. के. स्टालिन मंगलवार को सिंगापुर तथा जापान की नौ-दिवसीय यात्रा पर रवाना हुए और कहा कि उनकी यात्रा का मकसद राज्य में अधिक निवेश आकर्षित करना है।
स्टालिन ने पिछले साल दुबई की अपनी ऐसी ही यात्रा के दौरान छह निवेशकों के साथ 6,100 करोड़ रुपये के समझौतों पर हस्ताक्षर किए थे, जिससे राज्य में 15,100 नौकरियां सृजित होंगी।उन्होंने विदेश रवाना होने से पहले हवाई अड्डे पर मीडियाकर्मियों से कहा, ;;सिंगापुर तथा जापान की यात्रा का अहम उद्देश्य 2024 के वैश्विक निवेशक सम्मेलन के लिए निवेशकों को निमंत्रण देना है।

प्रतापगढ़ (उप्र)। प्रतापगढ़ जिले के सांगीपुर थानाक्षेत्र के एक गांव में युवक की छत पर सोते समय चाकू से गोदकर हत्या किये जाने का मामला प्रकाश में आया है। पुलिस ने एक मामला दर्ज करके मृतक के भाई को हत्या करने के आरोप में गिरफ्तार कर लिया है।
सांगीपुर थाने के प्रभारी निरीक्षक (एसएचओ) मनोज कुमार यादव ने मंगलवार को बताया कि थानाक्षेत्र के जूही शुक्लपुर गांव निवासी शैलेन्द्र तिवारी उर्फ़ परदेशी यहां थाने का चौकीदार है, जिसने घरेलू कलह में सोमवार रात छत पर सो रहे अपने छोटे भाई ज्ञानेंद्र तिवारी (28) की चाकू से गोदकर हत्या कर दी।
एसएचओ ने बताया कि परिवार वालों के शोर मचाने पर ज़ब पड़ोसियों ने दौड़ाया तो आरोपी शैलेन्द्र ने थाने आकर आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया। उन्होंने बताया कि मृतक के चाचा भूपेंद्र नाथ तिवारी की तहरीर पर आरोपी शैलेन्द्र के विरुद्ध हत्या का मामला दर्ज करके उसको गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया है।यादव ने कहा कि शव को पोस्टमार्टम के लिए भेज कर घटना की जांच की जा रही है।
मुंबई। मुंबई पुलिस को उसके आधिकारिक ट्विटर हैंडल पर शहर में विस्फोट करने की धमकी मिलने के बाद महाराष्ट्र के नांदेड़ से एक व्यक्ति को हिरासत में लिया गया है।
एक पुलिस अधिकारी ने मंगलवार को यह जानकारी दी।अधिकारी ने कहा कि एक अज्ञात व्यक्ति ने सोमवार को ट्वीट किया कि ;;मैं बहुत जल्द मुंबई में विस्फोट करने जा रहा हूं।
उन्होंने कहा कि व्यक्ति की लोकेशन मुंबई से करीब 625 किलोमीटर दूर मराठवाड़ा क्षेत्र के नांदेड़ शहर में मिली। अधिकारी ने कहा कि संदिग्ध को हिरासत में लिया गया है और मामला दर्ज किया जा रहा है।

नोएडा। थाना सेक्टर- 49 क्षेत्र के सेक्टर 47 से दो किशोरियां लापता हो गई हैं। किशोरियों के पिता ने मंगलवार दोपहर थाना पुलिस से इस मामले में शिकायत की।
थाना सेक्टर-49 के प्रभारी संदीप चौधरी ने बताया कि सेक्टर 47 में रहने वाले एक व्यक्ति ने थाने में रिपोर्ट दर्ज कराई है कि उसकी दो बेटियां जिनकी उम्र क्रमश 17 और 15 वर्ष है कल से घर से बिना बताए कहीं चली गई हैं।
उन्होंने बताया कि घटना की रिपोर्ट दर्ज करके पुलिस मामले की जांच कर रही है। थाना प्रभारी ने बताया कि किशोरियों को बरामद करने के लिए पुलिस की दो टीमें लगाई गई हैं।
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act will likely be removed completely from Assam by November, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday, reported NDTV.
AFSPA gives Army personnel sweeping powers in disturbed areas to search, arrest and to open fire if they deem it necessary for “the maintenance of public order”.
The law was first imposed in Assam in November 1990 and is extended after a review of the security situation every six months. It is currently in place in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts as well as Lakhipur subdivision of Cachar district, reported The Times of India.

इसी मुद्दे पर अब कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने नए संसद भवन के उद्घाटन समारोह के लिए राष्ट्रपति द्रौपदी मुर्मू को निमंत्रण नहीं दिए जाने को लेकर सरकार पर हमला बोला है। मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे ने ट्वीट कर सरकार को घेरा है। उन्होंने कहा कि ऐसा लगता है कि मोदी सरकार दलित और जनजातीय समुदायों से राष्ट्रपति केवल चुनावी वजहों से बनाती है। खड़गे ने कहा कि जब शिलान्यास हुआ था तब तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद को निमंत्रण नहीं दिया गया था। अब उद्घाटन के कार्यक्रम में द्रौपदी मुर्मू को निमंत्रण नहीं दिया गया है।

जानकारी के अनुसार राजस्थान के कई जिलों में हल्की बारिश का दौर शुरू हो गया। भीलवाड़ा, झालावाड़, चित्तौड़गढ़ में भी पानी बरसा है। वहीं तपन के बीच शुरू हुई बारिश ने राहत दी है। मौसम विभाग की माने तो आने वाले चार दिन राज्य में बारिश-आंधी का दौर जारी रहेगा।
मौसम विभाग के अनुसार इस दौरान राजस्थान के बीकानेर, जयपुर, भरतपुर और अजमेर संभाग के जिलों में आंधी-बारिश होने के साथ-साथ कहीं-कहीं ओले भी गिर सकते हैं। इससे तापमान में 4-5 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक की गिरावट हो सकती है।
Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has criss-crossed the country over the past month. His long tour has taken him from Delhi to West Bengal and from Uttar Pradesh to Maharashtra, travelling with one goal: to persuade key Opposition leaders to unite against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for next year’s Lok Sabha polls.
The strategy behind Opposition unity is to field one joint Opposition candidate against that of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in as many Lok Sabha constituencies as possible. In theory, this is meant to consolidate the anti-BJP votes in those seats. Kumar’s recent meetings seem to have have yielded a more favourable response from Opposition leaders than previous similar attempts.
This initiative by Kumar, observers say, is meant to position him for a greater role at the Centre. These meetings put him ahead in that race among ambitious Opposition leaders. The reason Kumar has been able to take this lead is because other Opposition leaders remain tied down in their states and do not have his strong credentials, observers suggest.
However, others remain sceptical not only about what Kumar can achieve but also about the broader strategy of unifying the Opposition.

The announcement by the Reserve Bank of India on Friday withdrawing Rs 2,000 denomination notes from circulation has predictably brought back the memories of demonetisation and the uncertainty of holding cash. Some would argue that this is not a big deal: the circulation of Rs 2,000 currency note was in any case shrinking and it was inevitable that it would be withdrawn some time or the other.
The Reserve Bank announcement was carefully worded to reinforce this view. The notes will remain legal tender and time has been given to exchange or deposit the withdrawn notes until September 30. Clearly some lessons have been learnt from the disastrous demonetisation of 2016. There was no dramatic address to the nation. It is presented as a normal exercise to implement the “clean money” policy, removing damaged or soiled notes from circulation, and to get rid of the notes that are, in any case, not used much in daily transactions.

Veteran Tamil and Telugu actor Sarath Babu died on Monday in Hyderabad due to multiple organ failure. He was 71 years old.
Babu had been undergoing treatment at the AIG Hospital in Hyderabad since last month.
Born in 1951 as Sathyam Babu Dixithulu, Babu made his acting debut in the 1973 Telugu film Rama Rajyam. He made his debut in Tamil cinema with s Nizhal Nijamagiradhu in 1978.
Babu acted in more than 200 films in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam with actors like Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and NT Rama Rao. He got acclaim for his performances in movies like Mullum Malarum, Thisai Maariya Paravaigal, and Nenjathai Killathe.

The Congress on Monday said that a “vast majority” of Opposition parties will soon meet to decide their strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The announcement came after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.
“We had a detailed discussion about the opposition parties’ meeting,” Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal told reporters. “In one to two days, a final decision will be made about the date and venue of the meeting. Vast majority of parties will attend.”
